Division Chief for General Surgery

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Medical Group are recruiting a Division Chief for General Surgery. The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership across the full range of division service areas, including the tripartite missions of the academic institution: clinical and administrative service, education, and research.

This academic role in the Department of Surgery at IUSM will work with and represent 21 faculty members and 11 advanced practice providers covering 7 hospitals in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 2025, the division saw over 7,800 new patients and performed over 6,600 surgeries. The division provides a comprehensive range of surgical services, encompassing colon & rectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery.

In addition, the division is home to a nationally recognized Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program, known for its excellence in patient outcomes, innovation, and adherence to national quality standards. This breadth of services enables the team to deliver highly specialized, multi-disciplinary care to a diverse patient population. The division also supports advanced surgical training through its Fellowship Council accredited Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Surgery fellowship, offering one fellowship position annually.

In addition, the division plays a significant role in surgical education, supporting one of the nation’s largest general surgery residency programs by training approximately 58 residents and offering extensive clinical exposure, mentorship, and multidisciplinary learning opportunities across diverse service lines.
