Role Overview

Summer Camp Counselors assist the Programs and Education Department in coordinating camps for first to eighth grades during school breaks. Join us in providing unforgettable experiences for our community youth. Camps engage learning on a variety of topics and vary by age. View the summer camp schedule here. Camps are conducted at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role requires prior experience working with children.

Schedule

You will work up to 37.5 hours per week during these camp sessions:

  • June 1 - 26:
    Monday - Friday, 7:40 am - 1:00 pm or 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm
  • July 6 - 21:
    Monday - Friday, 7:40 am - 1:00 pm or 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Additional hours are available for May 26 - 29 and August 3 - 7.

Salary traditionally starts at $16.73 per hour.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with leading camp activities and encouraging youth in hands-on activities. Modify program activities as needed to better meet camper needs.
  • Assist with preparation of materials and coordinating supplies for camp activities.
  • Supervise 1st through 8th grade campers and follow disciplinary procedures when needed; report disciplinary issues to the Camp Program Manager or Sr. Youth Programs Manager immediately.
  • Mentor and encourage creativity, exploration, and a hands-on, minds-on learning environment with campers.
  • Model leadership, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn and explore with campers.
  • Assist with set-up/clean-up of activities including before/after camp games and activities.
  • Assist with evaluation of activities and share feedback with the Camp Program Manager.
  • Provide a safe environment for play, learning, and discovery with campers.

What You'll Need for Success

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with school-aged children
  • Strong communications skills with school-aged campers
  • Exhibit excellent public speaking skills, enthusiasm, and creativity while interacting with visitors of all ages and abilities
  • Collaborative personality and a team player
  • Ability to maintain campers' safety and wellbeing
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and attitude
  • Ability to work 7:40 am-1:00 pm or 12:30 – 5:30 pm during the months of June and July 2026
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Physical effort:

  • Educators must move within the classroom
  • Educators must assist set up of tables, chairs, and program supplies
  • Educators work primarily inside the museum building with recess outside for 30 minutes, weather permitting
  • Some camps include offsite visits within walking distance

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
