Job Summary

Job Title: Instructional Assistant

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt, hourly employee

Standard Hours per Day: 7 hours per day (no 30‑minute unpaid meal break)

Work Days: 181 days (school days)

Work Year: All days when students are scheduled to attend school, per calendar

Salary Schedule & Benefits: Paid on the "Instructional Assistants" salary schedule; eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule. Starting pay $16.05 per hour.

Reports To: One or more teachers; teachers and instructional assistants report to the building Principal.

Supervises: No direct supervision of other employees.

Essential Functions
  • Monitors the activities and behavior of children during the absence of the classroom teacher(s) to ensure physical and environmental safekeeping and adherence to conduct and disciplinary controls.
  • Assists the teacher(s) in the supervision of learning activities, circulating within the classroom and providing assistance and learning support to students.
  • Provides instruction as prescribed by the supervising teacher(s) and reinforces skills introduced, using games, stories, or other constructive activities.
  • Assists teachers in checking and objectively evaluating student work; instructs students individually and in small groups based on instructional guidelines.
  • Assists in managing student behavior and maintaining classroom order; may provide input in development of classroom activities and learning tools.
  • Cooperates in preparation of lesson plans and classroom activities.
  • Observes students’ language, math, and communication skills; monitors progressive learning; reports deficiencies to the teacher(s); documents learning activity records.
  • Prepares or assists in preparing instructional materials; performs support tasks such as photocopying, laminating, typing correspondence, and filing paperwork.
  • Coordinates with media center staff for classroom learning resources; sets up equipment for teacher use.
  • Assists in preparing bulletin boards, classroom decorations, displays of student work, and other objectives.
  • Prepares drafts of reports and completes forms, schedules, and other data as directed.
  • Learns students’ assigned bus assignments to assist with proper boarding.
  • Maintains accurate records of student information that may require computer entry of scores and other data.
  • Assumes monitoring duties (hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, bus duty); ensures student conduct; escorts students to activity areas.
  • Provides assistance in labs and explains lesson plans to students for better understanding.
  • Maintains up‑to‑date knowledge of current technology used by Warren.
  • Ensures timely and accurate information maintenance.

Entry-Level Requirements
  • Education/Training: An associate's degree or higher, or at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution; alternatively, pass the Para Pro test.
  • Experience: Previous vocational training and/or work experience with school-age children is preferred.
  • Certifications & Licenses: Must meet paraprofessional requirements per ESSA; pass an Expanded Criminal History Check and Expanded Child Protection Index Check; hold an associate's degree, two years of college, or pass the Para Pro Assessment. The Para Pro Assessment is available at no cost for prospective employees.
  • Other: Ability to perform essential functions, meet performance aptitudes, and fulfill physical/sensory/environmental requirements, with or without reasonable accommodations.
