Description
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), the Assistant Hall Director (AHD) is a key figure in enriching the experience of all residents. By supporting the Director of Residence Life (DRL) in the dynamic management of residence halls, this live‑in position plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant community among residents. The AHD's role in training, supervising, and empowering Resident Assistants (RAs) is pivotal, as is their leadership in implementing programs that inspire student development and well‑being.
The AHD also undertakes various administrative tasks, all of which contribute to a flourishing living environment.
Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Hall Director
- Establish and nurture relationships with residents, actively listen to concerns and needs to create a supportive environment.
- Facilitate community‑building initiatives, including social events, floor meetings, and themed programs.
- Advise and mentor RAs and student leaders within the residence halls in areas such as conflict resolution, community development, and program planning.
- Respond to student emergencies and provide crisis intervention when required, ensuring the safety and well‑being of our residents.
- Assist in the training and supervision of Resident Assistants, offering ongoing feedback and contributing to performance evaluations.
- Delegate tasks to RAs and ensure they effectively manage their assigned responsibilities.
- Coordinate staff meetings and create professional development opportunities for student staff.
- Monitor compliance with housing policies and procedures within the hall, enforcing rules and addressing violations.
- Conduct room checks and address maintenance issues promptly within the residence hall.
- Maintain accurate student information records, incident reports, and other administrative documents.
- Collaborate with the Director of Residence Life (DRL) and other Student Affairs staff to develop and execute programming that aligns with the department's strategic goals.
- Plan and oversee special events within the hall, such as academic support workshops, cultural celebrations, leadership development, personal development, spirituality, and wellness.
- Promote student engagement and participation in hall activities, enhancing the overall student experience.
- Participate in the on‑call duty rotation, responding to student concerns, emergencies, and policy violations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for crisis response and conflict resolution during assigned duty shifts.
- Communicate and collaborate with Campus Safety, Residence Life staff, and other campus departments as needed.
- Provide support to Resident Assistants (RAs) and assist with incident documentation and reporting.
- Address facility and maintenance issues by submitting work orders and following up as necessary.
- Assist with weekend programming efforts to foster community engagement within the residence halls.
- Enforce college policies and procedures while promoting a safe and inclusive living environment.
- Conduct follow‑ups with students involved in incidents to provide support and reinforce community standards.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions to stay informed of updates and expectations related to duty responsibilities.
- Bachelor's degree
- Acceptance & enrolled into a graduate program
- Demonstrate strong moral character, including honesty and fair and consistent decision‑making.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Exemplified leadership and conflict resolution skills are essential.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment is necessary.
- Ability to supervise and mentor students.
- A commitment to student development and the creation of a positive living environment is essential.
- Prior experience working with student populations in a residential setting, preferably as a Resident Assistant or student leader, is preferred.
