Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, serve as a remedial resource instructor to improve students' achievement in reading, writing and mathematics, implementing district‑approved remedial reading, writing and mathematics curricula and programs.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and administer assessment techniques to determine the specific needs of individual students who require remedial instruction.
  • Create remedial reading, writing and mathematics strategies, lesson plans and instructional materials, and translate lesson plans into learning experiences that progress sequentially.
  • Teach letter and word recognition, sentence and paragraph structure, vocabulary, word usage, writing, and mathematics skills.
  • Conduct remedial learning activities, incorporating technology and a variety of instructional methods and materials.
  • Design evaluation instruments and procedures to monitor student progress and instruction effectiveness.
  • Document teaching and student progress, develop lesson plans, model required skills, and provide feedback to administration and teaching staff regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff, especially within grade level, regarding assessments and remedial teaching techniques; assist, coach, and model effective instructional strategies for classroom teachers.
  • Maintain familiarity with district and Indiana State standardized reading tests to adapt curriculum for maximum student achievement.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge and stay current on developments in remediation methods by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting of student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment, and maintain inventory records.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as directed by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotation and connotation, spelling, writing, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others involved in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Work in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile Certification / License
  • Indiana State Certification as a Remedial Language Arts Teacher, Mathematics Teacher, or as required for the position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
