Assistant Band Director
The Assistant Band Director supports the Band Director in the planning, organization, instruction, and promotion of the Mississinewa Community Schools Band Program. The Assistant Band Director works collaboratively to provide students in grades 6–12 with a comprehensive, age‑appropriate music education that develops musicianship, performance skills, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for music. The position assists with all aspects of the middle school and high school band programs, including instructional, performance, recruitment, and community engagement activities.
Qualifications- Valid Indiana Teaching License with appropriate music education certification preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music instruction and performance practices.
- Ability to work effectively with students in grades 6–12.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents, boosters, and community organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to student achievement, character development, and extracurricular excellence.
Instructional Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning and delivery of high‑quality music instruction for students in grades 6–12.
- Support the development of students' musical knowledge, technical proficiency, and performance skills.
- Assist with rehearsals, sectional practices, and performance preparation.
- Conduct rehearsals and performances as assigned by the Band Director.
- Help maintain a positive, disciplined, and student‑centered learning environment.
Program Support and Development
- Assist in promoting and recruiting students into the band program at all grade levels.
- Support efforts to increase student participation and retention within the band program.
- Assist in developing and maintaining a comprehensive band curriculum aligned with educational standards and program goals.
- Help coordinate communication with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders.
Performance and Event Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, organization, and implementation of a one‑week summer marching band camp.
- Assist with all marching band rehearsals, performances, and related activities.
- Participate in and support concerts, festivals, competitions, and adjudicated events.
- Assist with providing musical entertainment for home varsity football and basketball games.
- Assist with music preparation and performance responsibilities for the Mississinewa High School Commencement Ceremony.
- Conduct bands and musical ensembles as assigned during performances and rehearsals.
Community and Booster Relations
- Collaborate with the Band Director and Band Booster organization to support program initiatives and fundraising activities.
- Assist in organizing and promoting events that enhance community engagement and support for the band program.
- Foster positive relationships with students, parents, alumni, and community members.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with organizing and supervising student participation in parades, community performances, convocations, honor band events, educational trips and travel opportunities, and other performances and activities associated with the band program.
- Assist in maintaining band equipment, uniforms, instruments, music libraries, and other program resources.
- Support compliance with all school corporation policies, Indiana High School Athletic Association (when applicable), and Indiana Department of Education guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Band Director, Building Principal, or Superintendent.
- Ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances.
- Ability to lift and move musical equipment and instruments as needed.
- Ability to travel with students to performances, competitions, and other events.
Compensation, work calendar, and assignment expectations shall be established annually by the Mississinewa Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees in accordance with applicable contracts, extracurricular assignment schedules, and school corporation policies.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated annually by the Band Director and/or Building Principal in accordance with Mississinewa Community School Corporation policies and procedures.
Reporting StructureReports directly to the Band Director and Building Principal.
