We are currently seeking a highly qualified Elementary Life Skills Teacher to join our team and lead our efforts in providing outstanding special education services.

The Elementary Life Skills Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to elementary school students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities in a life skills classroom setting. This role involves teaching essential life skills, fostering independence, and promoting students' functional abilities in preparation for transition to post-elementary settings.

• Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that focus on functional academics, including math, literacy, money management, time telling, and functional reading skills.
• Design and deliver instruction using adapted curriculum materials, hands‑on activities, and real‑life applications to promote students' understanding and mastery of practical skills.

• Teach essential daily living skills, such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, household chores, and safety practices, to promote independence and self‑sufficiency.
• Provide opportunities for hands‑on practice in simulated and real‑life settings to generalize skills and promote functional independence.

• Teach and model social skills, communication strategies, and appropriate behavior in various social settings, including school, home, and community environments.
• Facilitate community‑based instruction and outings to help students develop practical skills for navigating public spaces, shopping, and accessing community resources.

• Provide individualized support and behavior management strategies to address students' unique needs and challenges.
• Implement positive behavior support plans, visual supports, and sensory accommodations to promote a positive and supportive classroom environment.

• Collaborate with related service providers, paraprofessionals, and support staff to address students' unique needs and provide a comprehensive range of services.
• Communicate regularly with parents/guardians through meetings, progress reports, and informal updates to share insights into students' progress, behavior, and achievements.

• Collaborate with transition specialists, families, and community agencies to develop and implement transition plans that support students' post‑elementary goals and aspirations.
• Provide vocational exploration opportunities, job readiness training, and work‑based experiences to help students develop employability skills and explore career options.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education, Education, or related field.
• Valid teaching license/certification for special education.
• Previous experience working with elementary‑aged students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities.
• Knowledge of adapted curriculum materials, functional academics instruction, and transition planning.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs.

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, following the guidelines set by the school corporation.

The Elementary Life Skills Teacher typically works in an educational setting, such as an elementary school. This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate parent meetings, events, or professional development activities. The role involves frequent interaction with young children, families, and staff members, as well as administrative duties related to program management and coordination. The capability to effectively bend, stoop and reach items at specific heights is expected in this position.

The Elementary Life Skills Teacher is expected to be able to lift and carry objects of up to 50 lbs without assistance. This position may involve sitting and/or standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks.
