About the Role

Adjunct Faculty are hired each semester on an as‑needed basis. They are responsible for creating a learning environment that assists students in reaching their goals; and for providing effective instruction and assessment within the framework of common syllabi provided.

Major Responsibilities
  • Facilitate student learning by delivering assigned classes in accordance with college policy and course objectives.
  • Make optimal use of available technology to enhance instructional methods.
  • Supplement and alter, where appropriate, lesson plans, assignments, tests, and materials.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and other requirements.
  • Engage with students proactively and regularly in meaningful and productive ways that impact student learning and lead to a positive experience with Ivy Tech Community College.
  • Demonstrate evidence of developing and implementing teaching strategies focused on engaging students with their learning.
  • Interact with students and co‑workers in a professional and cooperative manner, complying with college policies, guidelines and expectations.
  • Maintain a safe, quality educational environment.
  • Promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees, ensuring every individual feels respected and valued.
Instruction & Student Learning
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled, designing curriculum that embraces diversity and models inclusive teaching strategies, with an understanding of the socio‑cultural issues of traditionally underrepresented groups.
  • Consider individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities.
  • Participate in the identification of students with academic or other needs and respond using appropriate resources.
  • Use technology appropriately to meet course objectives and clearly communicate expectations to students.
  • Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Maintain attendance records, submit grades timely, and provide progress feedback to students throughout the semester.
  • Distribute and maintain accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, cross‑college, and instructor requirements.
  • Conduct classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule, employing assessment techniques to measure achievement of course goals.
  • Engage in periodic meetings with the department, Lead Instructor, and Chairperson regarding teaching duties and professional development.
Student Engagement & Advisement
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, and interaction between students and faculty.
  • Use technology to assist communication with students, encouraging a sense of community for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Advise potential or current students within the discipline about program, career, and transfer options to aid degree completion.
  • Refer students to appropriate academic support services available at the College or in the community.
Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in engineering; or master’s degree and 18 graduate semester hours in Mechanical Engineering.
  • All educational degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Passion for teaching in engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to use innovative teaching techniques.
  • Familiarity with distance learning and willingness to use technology tools in instruction.
