Job Description

At Adelante Schools, our Middle School ELA Teachers create an unmatched scholar experience grounded in rigorous academics, strong relationships, and a deep belief in what every student can achieve.

In this role, you will develop scholars’ literacy, critical thinking, and clarity and purpose in communication during the pivotal middle school years. You will lead engaging, rigorous instruction that deepens scholars’ reading, writing, and analysis, helping them make meaning from complex texts and express their ideas with confidence.

At Adelante, we believe every teacher is a foundational reading teacher. As an ELA teacher, you lead this work while also partnering with colleagues across content areas to ensure scholars are building the literacy skills needed to access all subjects at a high level.

Our middle school model is departmentalized, allowing you to focus fully on English Language Arts while collaborating closely with your grade level team to deliver a cohesive, high-quality experience for scholars.

You will bring literature and writing to life through a rigorous, engaging curriculum supported by strong instructional materials, digital tools, and meaningful discussion. Our goal is not just skill-building, but engagement, ensuring that scholars think deeply, ask questions, and connect their learning to the world around them.

We set our teachers up to succeed. You will have access to high-quality curriculum, the materials you need, and a team that prioritizes coaching, collaboration, and continuous growth so you can focus on instruction and impact.

Above all, you will build a classroom culture rooted in high expectations, strong relationships, and joy where scholars feel seen, challenged, and empowered to find their voice.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Implement curricula and activities that meet Indiana academic standards.
  • Conduct assessments to gauge progress toward academic standards.
  • Utilize assessment data to refine the curriculum and inform teaching strategies.
  • Apply consistent rewards and/or consequences to ensure scholars adhere to the school's core values, expectations, and code of conduct.
  • Be accountable for scholars’ mastery of academic standards.
  • Contribute to grade-level and school-wide activities.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with scholars, families, and colleagues.
  • Engage actively in team meetings, including participating in an annual summer staff orientation and training.
  • Supervise scholars during classes, breaks, meals, specials, and transitions to ensure a productive learning environment and their safety.
  • Attend and engage in school events outside regular hours (e.g., family nights, scholar performances, field trips, report card nights, and Teacher-Family Conferences).
  • Uphold and promote Adelante’s core values and educational philosophy.
  • Commit to being present and engaged at the school from 7:10 AM to 4:10 PM, Monday through Friday, with flexible work times available from 2:30‑4:10 PM.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Commitment to and desire for continuously improving personal practice and school culture through rigorous coaching and professional development.
  • Proven ability to contribute to and collaborate with a high-performing team toward high, equitable achievement for all scholars.
  • Outstanding emotional intelligence, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical and organizational skills.
  • Eagerness for constant observation and feedback.
  • Deeply rooted belief that children are capable of reaching the highest bars we set for them.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Valid Indiana State certification or proof of reciprocal licensure in a different state is required. Applicants in Indiana State-approved alternate certification programs must provide proof of enrollment.
