Overview

The special education teacher is responsible for planning and implementing goals of the students’ Individual Education Programs (IEP), ensuring that all legal requirements are met and that instruction is tailored to each student’s needs. The role supports students in 5th and 6th grade with mild interventions and inclusion in regular classroom settings.

Responsibilities
  • Follow legal requirements as dictated by state and federal statutes.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups in special education skill areas.
  • Plan curriculum, lessons, and special education programs and teaching methods.
  • Evaluate and monitor student progress.
  • Maintain the physical classroom environment.
  • Prepare report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other forms.
  • Maintain communication with parents or caregivers of classroom students.
  • Plan individual educational programs designed to meet student needs, conforming to legal requirements.
  • Develop and implement specific objectives for each student.
  • Supervise students and special education assistants during instruction.
Qualifications
  • Valid teaching certificate with appropriate special education endorsement.
  • Ability to interact with public and other staff.
  • Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instruction.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and student needs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community.
  • Speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Language Skills
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Present information effectively and respond to questions from administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, or the general public.
Mathematical Skills
  • Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Apply financial concepts and statistical inferences.
Reasoning Ability
  • Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Use available information to develop long‑term and short‑term goals and objectives.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly stand, walk, talk, see, and hear (corrected or uncorrected).
  • Frequent use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasional sit and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasional lifting of 40 pounds or more individually or pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral vision, and focusing.
Work Environment
  • Variable noise level depending on activities.
  • Constant time pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Greater exposure to infection risk in positions dealing with severely involved students; confrontation or assaultive behaviors possible with behaviorally disordered students.
Salary

Salary will be commensurate with the level of education and experience of the recommended candidate.

  • Career Path I: $47,000 – $66,500
  • Career Path II: $48,500 – $90,500
