Adjunct Faculty – Mechanical Engineering (Part-time).

Location:

Indianapolis. Reporting to Department/Program Chair.

About the Role

Adjunct Faculty are hired each semester on an as‑needed basis, responsible for creating a learning environment that assists students in reaching their goals and for providing effective instruction and assessment within the framework of common syllabi provided.

Major Responsibilities
  • Facilitate student learning by delivering assigned classes in accordance with college policy and course objectives.
  • Make optimal use of available technology to enhance instructional methods.
  • Supplement and alter, where appropriate, lesson plans, assignments, tests, and materials.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and other requirements.
  • Engage with students proactively and regularly in meaningful and productive ways that impact student learning and lead to a positive experience.
  • Demonstrate evidence of developing and implementing teaching strategies focused on engaging students with their learning.
  • Interact with students and co‑workers in a professional and cooperative manner, complying with college policies, guidelines, and expectations.
  • Maintain a safe, quality educational environment.
  • Promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees.
Instruction & Student Learning
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled.
  • Design curriculum that embraces diversity to foster student talent, modeling inclusive teaching strategies and an understanding of socio‑cultural issues of traditionally under‑represented groups.
  • Consider individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities.
  • Identify students with academic or other needs and respond using appropriate resources.
  • Use technology appropriately to meet course objectives and communicate expectations to students.
  • Keep accurate records, maintain attendance, submit grades timely, and provide progress feedback throughout the semester.
  • Distribute accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, cross‑college, and instructor requirements.
  • Conduct classes punctually and per the prescribed meeting schedule.
  • Employ appropriate assessment techniques to measure student performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
  • Participate in periodic meetings with the department, Lead Instructor, and Chairperson regarding teaching duties and professional development.
Student Engagement & Advisement
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere encouraging active and collaborative learning, academic challenge, and student‑faculty interaction.
  • Use technology to assist in communication with students.
  • Encourage a sense of community among students inside and outside the classroom.
  • Advise potential or current students within the discipline about program, career, or transfer options available to assist with degree completion.
  • Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.
Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in engineering; or master’s degree and 18 graduate semester hours in Mechanical Engineering.
  • All degrees from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Passion for teaching in engineering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use innovative teaching techniques.
  • Familiarity with distance learning and willingness to use technology tools in instruction.
  • Experience with collaborative learning techniques and student‑centered instructional methods.
  • Ability to work well with students and colleagues in a multi‑ethnic/multi‑cultural environment.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum two years of college teaching experience.
  • Minimum two years of related industrial experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of current technologies appropriate to the area of instruction.
