Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Religious Life (The Compass Center) is a collaborative student‑centered leader responsible for supporting the planning, implementation, and assessment of programs and initiatives that advance the mission of The Compass Center. Under the direction of the Director, this role provides leadership for student engagement efforts related to religious and spiritual life, interfaith engagement, leadership development, and belonging.

The Assistant Director works closely with students, faculty, staff, campus partners, affiliates, and community partners to create opportunities for learning, reflection, leadership, and community building. This position supports student organizations, coordinates educational and co‑curricular programs, contributes to communications and outreach efforts, and assists with the operational functions of The Compass Center.

The Assistant Director serves as a key member of The Compass Center team and contributes to the Center's broader mission of supporting spiritual life, meaning and purpose exploration, interfaith engagement, and multi-faith communities at Butler University.

Additional duties include contributing to other Compass Center and Department of Culture & Inclusion initiatives that support student engagement, learning, and success.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the University’s strategic goal of creating an intentionally inclusive and supportive learning and working environment that promotes student belonging, wellbeing, and success.
  • Participate in the collaborative planning, implementation, and assessment of programs and initiatives that advance the mission and strategic priorities of The Compass Center.
  • Provide leadership and support for student engagement efforts related to religious life, spiritual life, interfaith engagement, leadership development, and belonging.
  • Serve as administration for key Compass Center religious, spiritual life, and interfaith initiatives, including the development and implementation of programming, educational opportunities; maintenance of program records and assessment data; and coordination of communications, scheduling, and related operational needs.
  • Advise and support student organizations affiliated with The Compass Center through leadership development, program planning, event coordination, and resource navigation.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, affiliates, advisors, alumni, and community partners to develop and sustain meaningful educational and co‑curricular experiences.
  • Support the development of educational opportunities that foster religious literacy, interfaith engagement, spiritual wellbeing, and learning across difference.
  • Contribute to communications and outreach efforts, including promotion of programs, management of digital platforms, and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent The Compass Center on university committees, initiatives, and collaborative projects as assigned.
  • Coordinate and support Interfaith Council, including student recruitment, curriculum development, program planning, and logistics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director.
Required Qualifications
  • A master’s degree
  • Experience high level of engagement working directly with students or young adults in ministry, religious or spiritual life, interfaith engagement, or related educational or counseling settings.
  • Preparedness to facilitate program design, coordination, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience advising, mentoring, or supporting student leaders, student organizations, interns, and/or student employees.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student development and a commitment to student engagement, belonging, and success.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships and partnerships utilizing interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience communicating effectively with students, faculty, staff, campus partners, and community partners.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate workshops, presentations, or educational programs for a variety of audiences.
