Summer Employment Requirements
Staff are responsible for the safety and well‑being of campers. Culver reviews education, experience, and character to place applicants in appropriate positions. Minimum expectations include:
- Graduate of high school or equivalent, at least 18 years old (one year of college highly preferred).
- Desire and ability to work with children and teenagers.
- Demonstrated honesty, self‑discipline, consideration, cooperation, and strong leadership skills at all times.
- Efficient communicator and positive role model.
- Positive and respectful attitude toward coworkers, campers, and parents.
- Knowledge of and enforcement of rules, regulations, safety protocols, and procedures.
- Professional boundaries with all campers and staff.
- Punctuality, proper attire, and grooming.
- Openness to evaluation, guidance, and feedback.
- Good health, vitality, and physical stamina.
- Counselor – Establish rapport with campers, administer discipline with respect, act as 24/7 caretaker, uphold shared values, and maintain a positive example inside and outside camp.
- Instructor (Academic or Athletic) – Teach assigned activities or subjects, support camper achievement of lesson goals.
Minimum qualifications:
prior teaching or coaching experience and relevant skill expertise (e.g., coding, archery, golf). Some roles may require professional certification or licenses (lifetime, swimming, boating). - Naval Staff – Deliver Naval School curriculum and duties, conduct 3 double‑period classes weekly, coach sailing skills, supervise competitions. Requires solid sailing knowledge; a valid U.S. driver’s license and U.S. Sailing certification preferred.
- Waterski Staff – Supervise water ski instruction, maintain safety, instruct children of all ages from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Must be 21+ with a valid U.S. driver’s license;
Indiana Boaters license preferred. - Horsemanship Staff – Instruction in Balanced Seat English Equitation, Mounted Drill, and Horsemanship for 25‑30 students/day. Duties last 7 weeks; requires equitation skills.
- Administration – Lead daily operations, train and supervise staff, schedule classes, set program goals, and monitor progress. Requires several years of camp staff experience, strong leadership, and communication skills.
- International Staff – Subject to IENA J‑1 visa terms; not guaranteed by Culver.
