A Special Education Bus Aide ensures the safe transit of students with physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities. Key duties include assisting students on and off the bus, operating wheelchair lifts, securing safety harnesses, managing behavioral outbursts, and monitoring students' medical needs during the ride.
Core Responsibilities- Student Assistance & Loading: Help students board and exit the bus, load/unload wheelchairs, and properly secure tie‑downs and safety restraints.
- Behavioral Support: Implement individualized behavioral plans, maintain order, and de‑escalate emotional or physical disruptions during transit.
- Medical Monitoring: Assist with specialized health needs, which may include monitoring for seizures or managing specific emergency action plans.
- Communication: Act as a liaison between the bus driver, school staff, and parents regarding daily student behavior or route updates.
- Emergency Evacuation: Execute emergency bus evacuation procedures, including carrying or physically assisting non‑ambulatory students.
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is typically required.
- Certifications: Valid CPR and First Aid certifications are standard requirements.
- Physical Capabilities: Must be able to stoop, bend, and frequently lift heavy loads (often up to 50–70 pounds) to assist and secure students
