Position: Assistant Director, DEAP Program (Student Support Specialist)
Location: Indianapolis

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE (IN-UCOL-IUINA)

The Dedicated to Enrichment, Achievement, and Persistence (DEAP) program serves over 700 students, many of whom are first‑generation and low‑income. DEAP works with students across all majors from the beginning of their college attendance through graduation, developing and implementing policies, procedures, programs, and services that impact retention and graduation.

The Assistant Director assists with the management, administration, and implementation of the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Indiana University (IU) Indianapolis DEAP program. The position provides leadership and coordination for academic and career support services, aligning with the institutional priority of getting students toward on‑time graduation. The Assistant Director serves as a liaison to IU Indianapolis departments, such as Undergraduate Admissions, Orientation Services, and Academic and Career Development, and works with the Director to formulate and implement policies, program planning, decision‑making, and data assessment.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures the provision of excellent academic counseling and oversight of the program’s academic procedures and policies.
  • Assists with hiring and supervising professional and student staff.
  • Oversees academic services and support for the DEAP program, providing comprehensive academic coaching, managing academic policies, designing targeted student‑success interventions (e.g., probation and reinstatement), coordinating workshops, tutoring, and campus referrals, and leading data collection and analysis to inform retention strategies.
  • Manages the DEAP First‑Year Application onboarding process for incoming first‑year students, coordinating DEAP Summer Live sessions and the DEAP Pinning Ceremony to ensure a seamless, engaging transition.
  • Provides strategic leadership to the instructional team for DEAP First‑Year Seminar courses by designing, implementing, and continuously refining an engaging, outcomes‑driven curriculum and high‑impact enrichment experiences during Bridge Week and the fall semester.
  • Plans, implements, and assesses large‑scale DEAP signature programs—Family Reunion, Networking Night, End‑of‑Year Celebration, and Senior Brunch—ensuring strategic alignment, high‑quality execution, effective stakeholder engagement, and post‑event evaluation.
  • Represents DEAP at campus meetings and serves as liaison to key IU Indianapolis offices.
  • Partners with the Program Director to implement policies, support participant selection, and contribute to data collection and assessment for strategic decision‑making.
  • Manages and coordinates the day‑to‑day operations of the DEAP Lounge, monitoring usage data, implementing programming initiatives, and leading the hiring, training, and supervision of Program Specialists and Peer Academic Coaches.
  • Oversees the development, production, and distribution of the weekly DEAP newsletter to ensure consistent strategic communication and student engagement.
  • Assists with student recruitment and conducts individual intake meetings with DEAP students.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives to support students in crisis, facing adversity, or who belong to under‑represented populations.
  • Interacts directly with students at programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting individually to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback for future initiatives.
  • Places an emphasis on confidentiality, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
  • Collaborates with staff in the department and other departments, coordinating funding to sponsor student programs.
  • Projects outcomes for support services, measures and evaluates effectiveness against projected outcomes, and prepares reports on impact and budget for stakeholders.
  • Serves on committees and conducts student‑support research to identify and recommend best practices.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student‑support initiatives to ensure participation, inclusion, and engagement.
