Library Aide

Job Goals:
Manage the school library containing general, audio-visual, and specialized materials for use by students, faculty, and administrative staff. Provide each student with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual probing, growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.

Essential Functions:

May include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Administrative Duties

  • Operate and supervise the elementary library.
  • Recommend and administer the library budget.
  • Supervise automated library system.
  • Provide assistance with automated learning systems.
  • Train other workers engaged in cataloging, locating, filing, or copying selected material.
  • Organize and implement reading programs.
  • Plan school-wide activities during National Children's Book Week (November) and National Library Week (April).
  • Furnish information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Reference Duties

  • Assist students with research problems while providing educational experiences in the area of media resources.
  • Help students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Instruction Duties

  • Instruct teachers and students on the use of the computerized card catalog.
  • Deliver computer science instruction to students in grades K–3 using district-developed curriculum and classroom Chromebooks.
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
  • Consultation Duties

  • Serve as a resource person for committees or councils.
  • Serve as a resource person to teachers for classroom planning.
  • Selection and Acquisition Duties

  • Selects, orders, catalogs, maintains inventories, and classifies the general and collection and special collections of technical books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, audio-visual material, microforms, journal reprints, and other materials.
  • Assists staff in the selection of books and other instructional materials and inform the staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
  • Assists faculty by making library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Cataloging Duties

  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials.
  • Keeps materials current.
  • Qualification Requirements

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.     Education and/or

    Experience:

    Aides hired after January 8, 2006, must have:

    • Completed two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; or
    • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or
    • Passed the Para Pro

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

    Ability to speak effectively before groups of school employees, students or parents.

    Mathematical Skill

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Other

    Skills and Abilities

    Must be proficient in the use of computers for various office applications. Ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of 50 words per minute. Employee should also be able to use the machines, tools, equipment, and work aids that may be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work, i.e., adding machine, duplicating machine, copy machine, calculator, sorting machines, tools, charts, forms, ledgers, schedules, textbooks.
