JOB EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTSPosition Purpose / DescriptionNorth Central High School is seeking a highly organized, collaborative, and legally minded leader to serve as the Department Chair for Special Education
This is a high-impact, high-volume leadership role overseeing all academic, operational, compliance, staffing, and programming functions for a massive secondary special education department. The Department Chair manages daily logistics ranging from complex transportation and student crises to teacher evaluations and strict master scheduling. The ideal candidate will balance a deep commitment to student advocacy with the operational precision required to run a compliant, highly functioning department.
Skills and Qualifications- Deep working knowledge of IDEA, Article 7, and state compliance mandates.
- Proven experience managing complex schedules, data systems (Skyward, Edmentum, IEP systems), and large-scale staff allocations.
- Demonstrates leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback
- Possesses strong pedagogical knowledge and experience with effective instruction and assessment
- Shows a proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners
- Demonstrates the ability to examine student data and facilitate changes necessary to produce efficient and effective practices that will increase student achievement
- Significant understanding of secondary pedagogy including culturally responsive teaching, classroom management, and professional learning communities
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws impacting education
- Displays excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations, reports, memoranda, letters, grant proposals, curriculum documents, workshops and evaluations
- Strong work ethic, self-directed, and self-motivated
- Flexible schedule: obligations may occur outside of typically contracted hours and days in order to meet teacher schedules
- Ability to remain calm, structured, and solutions-oriented while handling frequent, immediate daily crises (behavioral, transportation, and staffing).
- Support program evaluation, material selection, and implementation, including general education and intervention or support classes
- Provide direction and coordination for how the curriculum is taught consistent with administrative expectations, district strategic plan, school improvement plan, vertical articulation, and high impact Tier 1 instructional practices
- Assist in vertical and/or horizontal articulation efforts throughout the district in alignment of content and curriculum, expectations of rigor, professional development opportunities and pedagogy
- Field-test strategies and tools to ensure they are practical, effective, and aligned with improving teacher practice and student outcomes before full implementation.
