Advisor to The Butler Collegian

Position Overview

The advisor is selected by the director of the School of Journalism and Creative Media in consultation with the current Collegian leadership and may serve in that capacity indefinitely at the discretion of the director and the Collegian staff.

The advisor is responsible for understanding and promoting the adherence to the Collegian’s policies, interpreting university rules and policies, assisting editors and staff members with understanding the objectives of the Collegian and their roles andduties and teaching staff members about newsroom management, law,ethics and basic journalistic tenets and techniques. The advisor serves as a consultant to problems and offers advice when it is solicited. The advisor may hold workshops and seminars at thestaff’s request.

The advisor shall not engage in prior review, restraint or censorship, adhering to the principles of freedom of expression.

The advisor may not be punished or removed based on any content decision made by student editors. The advisor will follow the Codeof Ethics for Advisors of Student Publications outlined by the College Media Association.

This position is from August through May working roughly 5 hoursper week.

• Advisor of The Butler Collegian
• Appoints the members of editor-in-chief selection committee in consultation with the current editor-in-chief, but does not provide input into selection
• Provides general advice, leadership, journalistic training and coaching on an as-needed basis to the editor-in-chief and Collegian staff
• Works with the editor-in-chief to plan a yearly retreat for incoming Collegian staffers
• Critiques and evaluates the professional standards, news judgment, reporting, writing/editing and design/visual skills of Collegian staffers as evidenced in the final news product. Also critiques and evaluates multimedia, such as video, podcasts, etc.;interactive media; and social media to engage news consumers and promote Collegian staff work
• Works with the editor-in-chief to update the Staff Manual on ayearly and as needed basis
• Does NOT determine content. Reviews content ONLY at the requestof the editor-in-chief
• The advisor serves as a consultant to problems and offers advice when it is solicited.
• The advisor may hold workshops and seminars at the staff’srequest.
• The advisor will offer a weekly critique of the Collegian,offering both praise and criticism in an effort to improve the workdone by the staff of the Collegian.
• Section editors, managing editors and the editor-in-chief are required to attend these weekly critique meetings unless they havea class conflict or other conflict approved by theeditor-in-chief.
• The advisor is responsible for understanding and promoting the adherence to the Collegian’s policies
• Interpreting university rules and policies
• Assisting editors and staff members with understanding the objectives of the Collegian and their roles and duties
• Teaching staff members about newsroom management, law, ethicsand basic journalistic tenets and techniques

• Experience working in higher education, student media,journalism, communications, or a related field.
• Bachelor's degree
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of journalism ethics and media law
• Ability to mentor and coach student leaders
• Organizational and interpersonal skills
