Working under the supervision of teachers, the assistant is a viable part of the total instructional program. The services performed include instructional, clerical, supervisory, and behavior management duties. The overall role is to provide support services to the classroom teacher and to implement programming as directed by classroom teachers, administrators, or the Case Conference Committee. Assistant teachers are required to follow the bylaws and policies of Special Education, their assigned school, and the governing school corporation.
This position will work in either the Behavior Support Program or the Autism Spectrum Disorder Program.
- Supervisory duties during playground, lunchroom, rest periods, loading/unloading buses, hall duty, and other activities as directed by the teacher, school principal, or their designee.
- Provide direct supervision to children who may struggle with self‑regulating emotions or sensory needs.
- Keep children in designated areas, recognizing that students may present escape‑related behaviors.
- Support tasks vary by classroom or student needs and may include:
- Developing positive relationships with students and staff.
- Assisting students with basic hygiene activities and routines.
- Implementing Behavior Intervention Programs as directed by the teacher.
- Providing extraordinary self‑discipline, patience, and understanding for students with emotional or autistic disabilities.
- Other support tasks as directed by the teacher, school principal, or the Director of Special Education.
- Ride/monitor buses when required; additional hours may be paid if the bus ride extends the workday.
- Provide one‑on‑one services for students with autistic/emotional behaviors.
- Follow students through various grades and levels (elementary, middle, high school), resulting in periodic building assignments.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, calculators, and telephone.
Travel RequirementsTravel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Pay Rate$15.75 per hour + $0.75 differential
Work ScheduleHours will be scheduled between 6.5 and 7.5 hours per day and finalized at the time of hire, depending on student needs. 182 days per year.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- High School Diploma.
- Willingness and desire to work with special needs children.
- Effective human relations skills including a calm and patient personality.
