Job Title:
Language Facilitator
- Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) Churubusco Elementary School
- Classified Position
The Language Facilitator supports students who are deaf or hard of hearing by facilitating access to communication, instruction, and social interactions throughout the school day. Working under the direction of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher and other licensed staff, this role helps ensure the student can fully participate in academic and extracurricular settings.
Responsibilities- Provide communication support based on the student's primary mode of communication (e.g., spoken language, sign-supported speech, or sign language if qualified)
- Reinforce and facilitate understanding of classroom instruction by:
- Clarifying directions
- Rephrasing or repeating information as appropriate
- Supporting the use of visual aids and cues
- Promote the development of expressive and receptive language skills in natural settings
- Support use of assistive technology (e.g., FM systems)
- Facilitate communication between the student, peers, and staff to support social interaction and inclusion
- Pre-teach or re-teach vocabulary and concepts when directed
- Collect data on communication access and student progress as required
- Collaborate regularly with:
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher
- General education teacher
- Speech-Language Pathologist
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all IEP and school guidelines
- Safe Hiring Solutions expanded background, including Indiana DCS index.
- High school diploma required; additional coursework or degree in education, special education, communication disorders, or related field preferred
- Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing is strongly preferred
- Knowledge of hearing loss, language development, and communication strategies
- Basic knowledge of sign language preferred
- Ability to work closely with a team and follow specialized plans
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- School-based setting (classroom, small group, and possibly extracurricular environments)
- Works under the supervision of licensed staff (DHH Teacher, building administrator, Special Education Director)
- May require movement between classrooms and settings throughout the day
- Compensation: $18.00
- 5 hours per day (27.5 hours per week)
- 185 day position
