Outage Manager
Job Description
The Outage Manager oversees the planning, scheduling, execution, and closeout of major outages at a large, integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power generation facility. This role coordinates multiple contractors and concurrent project work within the plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely completion of maintenance, capital, and construction activities. The Outage Manager monitors progress, manages risks and schedule conflicts, and provides clear communication to stakeholders throughout the outage lifecycle.
Responsibilities
+ Lead and support outage planning, scheduling, execution, and closeout activities for a large power generation facility.
+ Coordinate multiple contractors, work streams, and ongoing project work within the plant to ensure alignment with outage objectives.
+ Develop, review, and maintain outage schedules using P6 software, updating activities and milestones as conditions change.
+ Identify and resolve schedule conflicts, risks, and execution barriers to maintain safe and efficient outage performance.
+ Monitor outage progress against plan, track key performance indicators, and communicate status updates to stakeholders in a timely manner.
+ Assist with resource planning, including labor, materials, and equipment, to support outage execution and minimize downtime.
+ Manage contractor activities and logistics, ensuring work is sequenced properly and performed in accordance with plant standards and procedures.
+ Participate in outage planning meetings and daily coordination meetings to align work scopes, priorities, and timelines.
+ Support safe execution of maintenance, capital, and construction projects during the outage, promoting adherence to safety policies and procedures.
+ Collaborate with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, and project teams to integrate outage activities with ongoing plant operations.
+ Document lessons learned and contribute to continuous improvement of outage planning and execution processes.
Essential Skills
+ Proven experience managing outages, shutdowns, and/or turnarounds in an industrial environment.
+ Experience in utility power generation with specific experience in power block outage management.
+ Ability to coordinate multiple contractors and simultaneous work streams within a complex plant environment.
+ Proficiency working with P6 scheduling software for outage planning and schedule management.
+ Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear updates and interface effectively with diverse stakeholders.
+ Demonstrated leadership skills to guide teams and contractors during high-intensity outage periods.
+ Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify risks, develop mitigation plans, and resolve execution barriers.
+ Willingness to work on-site at the plant and support extended hours during outage execution.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in construction management within power generation or industrial facilities.
+ Familiarity with industrial environments and large-scale maintenance or capital project execution.
+ Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-visibility role during critical plant outages.
+ Comfort working with advanced and state-of-the-art power generation technologies.
Work Environment
This role is fully on-site at a 618-megawatt integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant, recognized as one of the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power facilities in the world. The plant uses state-of-the-art equipment and technology and is a unique facility with no other plant of its kind in the world. The Outage Manager initially supports outage planning and scheduling, typically working approximately 40-50 hours per week.
During active outage execution, the role requires extended hours, with an expectation of approximately 60-70 hours per week to support critical outage activities. The environment is industrial and power-generation focused, with close collaboration across operations, maintenance, engineering, and contractor teams.
