Job Description
The Mechanic B is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of Power Plant equipment and related auxiliary systems. This position supports the reliable, safe, and economical operation of utility services for the University.
The Mechanic B works through a prescribed program of training, coursework, and hands-on practical experience designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to independently perform the duties of a Mechanic
B. Equipment supported by this position includes steam turbine generators, steam boilers, heat recovery steam generators, chillers, diesel generators, air compressors, pumps, fans, and other power plant and utility equipment.
- Assist with the maintenance, inspection, repair, and overhaul of Power Plant equipment and systems.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of steam turbine generators, 400 psi steam boilers, heat recovery steam generators, and associated equipment.
- Support maintenance activities for steam turbine and electric-driven chillers used for air conditioning.
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of diesel generators, low-pressure air compressors, pumps, fans, and other ancillary equipment.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair auxiliary systems that support major Power Plant equipment.
- Perform assigned preventive and corrective maintenance activities to help ensure reliable and economical utility services.
- Follow established safety procedures, maintenance practices, and departmental standards.
- Participate in classroom training, coursework, and hands-on learning activities as part of the Utilities Department training program.
- Develop the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to progress toward fully performing the responsibilities of a Mechanic
B. - Maintain accurate records and documentation related to maintenance activities, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education- One-year certificate or equivalent training from an accredited college, technical school, or trade program.
- Completion of a technical school program or apprenticeship program is preferred.
- 1-2 years of related mechanical, maintenance, industrial, or utility experience.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting principles.
- Ability to learn and work with industrial Power Plant and utility equipment.
- Ability to read and follow technical instructions, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to develop technical skills through hands-on training.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from experienced mechanics and supervisors.
- Commitment to safe work practices and continuous learning.
- Successfully complete the Utilities Department training regimen for the Mechanic B position within 12 months of hire.
Hourly Rate: $27.39
