Overview
Mechanical Engineer II / Quality Control Lead – Carlsbad, New Mexico | Office & Fabrication Shop Based
Are you a Mechanical Engineer who enjoys being close to work where designs turn into real, fabricated equipment, and understands that strong engineering and strong compliance go hand in hand?
In this role, engineering execution and quality control are inseparable. You’ll design and support mechanical equipment while ensuring that what gets built meets ASME code requirements, quality standards and long-term operability expectations. Your engineering decisions influence compliance, inspection outcomes and the safe commissioning of equipment in the field. This is a hands-on role for someone who values accountability, documentation discipline and collaboration with fabricators, inspectors, and project teams – seeing projects through from early design to fabrication, inspection, and startup.
WhyJoin Us?
- Engineering With Purpose – Design pressure vessels and mechanical systems while ensuring they meet ASME and quality requirements from concept through commissioning.
- Built-In Compliance Leadership – Own QC and code compliance activities that are embedded in daily engineering work, not siloed from it.
- Hands-On Environment – Work directly with an in-house fabrication shop, inspectors and project teams.
- Broad Exposure & Growth – Gain end-to-end visibility into design, fabrication, inspection, and plant integration.
- Cross-Functional Impact – Partner closely with Engineering, Project Management, Fabrication, Procurement, Construction, Operations and Quality.
Mechanical Engineering (Primary Focus)
- Design pressure vessels and mechanical equipment with consideration for piping, valves, relief devices, foundations and structural components
- Perform ASME code calculations (Section I, Section VIII Div. 1, ASME B31.1, API 650/620) using CEI, Codeware/COMPRESS and hand calculations
- Review drawings, specifications, P&IDs and vendor data for compliance and mechanical integrity
- Prepare equipment, piping, material specifications and scopes of work
- Support procurement through technical bid evaluations, vendor selection and data review
- Coordinate with fabrication and construction teams to resolve engineering or quality issues
- Witness inspections and testing (e.g., hydrostatic testing) and document results
- Provide mechanical support to operating plants, fabrication activities and small-capital projects
- Travel as needed to support fabrication shops, vendors and project sites
Quality Control & Compliance (Integrated Responsibility)
- Maintain and administer the Project Services Quality Control Program
- Ensure compliance with ASME U, S, and R stamp requirements
- Coordinate Authorized Inspectors (AI), third-party NDE and required inspections
- Maintain ASME code files, QC documentation, weld procedures, welder qualifications and inspection records
- Review material certifications (MTRs), receiving inspections, and fabrication documentation
- Manage Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) and follow issues through to resolution
- Support audits, certifications and ongoing shop compliance activities
- Provide guidance and backup support to QC inspectors as needed
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5-10 years of mechanical engineering experience in pressure vessels and/or piping
- Working knowledge of ASME codes and quality control requirements
- Experience in fabrication shops or industrial environments
- Strong communication, organization and follow-through skills
- Ability to balance engineering judgment with compliance and documentation discipline
- Comfort working cross-functionally with engineers, fabricators, inspectors and project teams
Nice to Have
- Prior experience supporting or leading ASME QC programs
- Familiarity with plant operations or field construction support
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or inspectors
This is an office- and shop-based role that supports fabrication activities. Occasional short-duration travel for inspections, vendor visits and testing. Primarily standard business hours, with flexibility during critical fabrication or inspection phases.
