Position Overview

Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Controls (Internal Manufacturing Indianapolis, Roche Diagnostics – Near Patient Care Operations). You will provide technical engineering support for automated and semi‑automated manufacturing equipment, troubleshoot issues, lead process improvement projects, and train personnel. Your work will ensure the validated state of production processes and equipment is maintained.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of manufacturing methods, procedures, and processes for products, components, sub‑assemblies, and final assemblies.
  • Develop and improve automation and electromechanical processes by studying requirements, researching, testing manufacturing and assembly methods, and gathering observations from operators and maintenance technicians.
  • Interface with design and process development engineering to coordinate the release of new products into manufacturing.
  • Estimate manufacturing cost and recommend tooling, controls system hardware and software, and process requirements for new or existing production lines.
  • Manage multiple projects and time‑scopes for each project.
  • Ensure process changes are characterized and implemented following validation policies and procedures.
  • Assure system and product quality by designing testing methods, testing finished product and system capabilities, and confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
  • Assist department leadership in setting strategic direction.
  • Lead, advise, and mentor lower level staff.
  • Participate in the on‑call rotation to provide off‑shift or weekend support to production as needed.
  • Support key initiatives such as information management, cybersecurity, and life‑cycle management.
Key Skills & Knowledge
  • Hands‑on experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment control systems.
  • Electrical systems: PLC ladder logic and structured text (Allen Bradley PLCs, RSLogix/Studio 5000).
  • Motion controls (VFDs, servos).
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) – Factory Talk View SE/ME.
  • Vision inspection – Cognex Insight Explorer.
  • Distributed I/O – Profibus/Ethernet‑IP.
  • Sensor systems – presence/absence, position, process monitoring.
  • Modify control system programs, configurations, and electrical systems to support continuous improvement.
  • Work with vendors to identify improvement projects and replacement components.
  • Develop and execute equipment qualification requirements, testing, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with teams to implement improvements, qualify changes, and resolve quality/downtime issues.
  • Run simulations, analyze test data, and write comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to teach and educate stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Commitment to cross‑functional collaboration and breaking down silos.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline with 5years of relevant experience; or Master’s/PhD with 2years of relevant experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting, modifying, and/or developing industrial equipment controls systems (PLCs, HMIs, motion control, etc.).
  • Familiar with GMP in a regulated environment (Medical Device or Pharmaceutical).
  • Previous experience troubleshooting controls systems of high‑volume/speed manufacturing equipment.
  • Training or experience in Process Improvement Methodologies (e.g., LSS, PDCA).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, communicate clearly, and mentor others.
Additional Information



Location:

Indianapolis, Indiana (onsite). Relocation benefits are not available.

• Salary range: $83,200–$154,500

Annual (based on primary location). Actual pay will be determined by experience, qualifications, and other job‑related factors. A discretionary annual bonus may be available.

• The role also qualifies for benefits as detailed in the company benefits program.
