Role Overview
:

The Environmental Engineer conducts plan reviews and related work to determine compliance with applicable laws, rules, and standards in conformance with the mission and vision of the Indiana Department of Health to protect public health in the construction and operation of health care facilities and other structures requiring plan review and approval. Emphasis is on applying architectural and engineering standards, safety, sanitation, water supply, sewage disposal, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and state licensing requirements as applicable for facilities located in Indiana requiring State approval.

The incumbent may also assist with investigations or resolution of public health or environmental problems outside the purview of other agencies. They function as a resource on building and construction codes related to health care facilities, help track the status of Health Care Engineering (HCE) projects, assist in preparing presentations, and serve as the designated team leader in the absence of the Environmental Engineer Supervisor.

Salary Statement
:

The salary for this position typically starts at $75,010.00 but may be adjusted based on education or experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions include:

  • Performing detailed technical reviews and specifications of facilities and conducting on-site inspections to ensure compliance with Indiana's standards.
  • Reviewing permits, plans, specifications, and evaluating compliance history.
  • Conducting surveys, investigations, inspections, collecting samples, preparing reports, and possibly testifying in hearings or court.
  • Reviewing plans for deficiencies, recommending alternatives.
  • Ensuring safety compliance through inspections, advising enforcement staff, reviewing enforcement documents, attending hearings, and testifying as an expert witness.
  • Providing prompt responses to the public, consultants, contractors, officials, and permit applicants.
  • Representing the agency at national standards discussions and commenting on federal and state regulations.
  • Serving as a project officer for certain grants, ensuring effective use of funds.
  • Traveling frequently to conduct inspections, audits, and investigations, with flexible scheduling to meet operational needs.

This position is exempt from overtime and may require working more than 75 hours per pay period without additional compensation. The description is not exhaustive; other duties may be assigned as needed.

What You'll Need for Success:

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college.
  • Engineering license in Indiana.
  • Six years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and ability to assist in modifications.
  • Extensive environmental sciences knowledge, especially related to pollution control.
  • Understanding of division functions and coordination skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting, economics, and grant processes.
  • Research skills and ability to prepare reports.
  • Effective communication skills for technical discussions.
  • Program development and planning abilities.
  • Ability to review plans and specifications critically.
  • Knowledge of air, land, water pollution, waste disposal, occupational health, safety, and water supply.
  • Proficiency with CAD, documentation, and database tools.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may include supervisory duties based on agency needs.
