The Indiana Department of Natural Resources protects, enhances, preserves, and wisely uses natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education. The Division of Water collects, maintains, and provides water resource information. This includes administering surface and groundwater resource assessments, alleviating flood disaster damages, regulating floodplain areas, reviewing dam and levee projects, and educating the community about water efforts and conservation.
Role OverviewThis position is responsible for supervising the Water Rights and Use Section at the Division of Water. This section is responsible for the administration and implementation of Indiana Codes on water rights investigations, well driller licensing, well construction standards, Great Lakes Compact permit and approval processes, water shortage plan and sale of water program. Knowledge for this position encompasses regulatory requirements, hydrogeologic evaluations, policy development, stakeholder coordination, historical program decisions, and the interpretation and application of complex statutory provisions.

A Day In The Life- Establish goals and manage resources based on division guidelines and requirements.
- Provide geological consultation utilizing technical expertise regarding engineering geology, hydrogeology, and geology.
- Understand, interpret, and employ applicable State and Federal regulatory rules, guidance, and policies related to geological investigations and contaminant remediation.
- Ensure work schedules are properly coordinated and executed to maintain timely, consistent support to projects and customers.
- Coordinate with a technical and non-technical staff to address all logistical and safety issues.
- Review project plans, specifications, design reports, and technical data for appropriate geologic, geotechnical, and hydrogeological elements and interpretation(s).
- Make recommendations and determinations based on hydraulic, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, and hydrogeological input that will impact the final outcome of projects.
- Direct technical staff on how to meet design standards and improve routine repair and maintenance with the goal of enhancing overall safety.
- Participate in pre-hearing conferences, provide testimony as expert witness in pre-trial depositions and hearings, and testify in administrative or court hearings.
- Participate in outreach opportunities for Agency staff, the regulated community, and to the general public.
- Oversee and participate in special research projects or grant studies.
- Negotiate with permit applicants to ensure regulatory program compliance.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
