Description

The Mechanical Control Units Design Engineer will develop control system hardware requirements and guide Rolls‑Royce approved suppliers through the detailed design process to ensure that delivered hardware meets all technical and program requirements. The role spans the project lifecycle from requirements definition, concept development, detail component design, validation, and verification testing through final production release.

This role may operate within a small team of colleagues to deliver the required hardware and associated documentation and will interface with both external suppliers and the internal engine program teams.

Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical control units, including oversight of mechanical design and analysis of components, taking the design through multiple gated design reviews, and overseeing validation testing performed by contracted suppliers of the control units.
  • Coordinate effort between the design, purchasing, manufacturing engineering teams and suppliers to ensure program needs are met through execution of the work package to plan.
  • Identify and manage project risks (technical, cost, supply chain and schedule) in accordance with the risk management plan.
  • Engage in technical, manufacturing and supply chain issues and opportunities to enable quick decision making.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 1+ years of experience in mechanical design or control systems, OR
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, OR
  • PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Desire to work successfully in a team environment, establishing collaborative relationships with coworkers.
  • Experience with control systems hardware design.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), change management, and risk management processes.
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis and other problem‑solving techniques.
  • Knowledge of RTCA/DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 environmental testing standards.
  • Current (or ability to obtain/maintain) U.S. DOD Secret or Top‑Secret security clearance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
