Indianapolis, IN/Hybrid – 3 office days per week.

Job Overview

As a Component Design Engineer for gas turbine inlets, nacelles, installations and exhaust (INIE), you will be part of the global Structures & Controls Engineering, Technology & Safety organization. You will develop complex engineering solutions that satisfy cutting‑edge aerospace functional and physical requirements and exhibit robustness for manufacturing capability. Within your assigned propulsion system program, you’ll be responsible for developing, assessing, and delivering INIE hardware and systems that push the envelope with performance, life, and efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Develop new component designs and design changes for high‑performance gas turbine INIE hardware and systems, including creating design concepts, optimizing concepts to a final definition, preparing technical presentations and documents, performing dimensional analyses, supporting creation of drawings, delivering hardware for validation, and releasing hardware to production.
  • Perform analyses for gas turbine INIE hardware and systems to substantiate suitability for new engine applications, extended performance of existing engines, and interface requirements.
  • Present and defend design solutions and technical work to program leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Support the supply chain in procuring hardware, including review of supplier documentation, assessment of non‑conforming hardware, and review of supplier change proposals.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, service, and aftermarket issues promptly as they arise to keep production on target and the fleet in operation.
  • Perform investigations of in‑service and/or development hardware issues including failure analysis, root cause/corrective action (RCCA), reporting, and documentation.
  • Share findings with the global turbo machinery team in accordance with export control regulations.
Qualifications
  • Basic Requirements:
    Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with 1+ years of experience, OR Master’s degree in engineering, OR JD/PhD in Engineering.
  • Good interpersonal skills, effective teamwork and problem resolution skills.
  • Good technical writing skills.
  • Experience with component design methods, tools, and practices, including CAD (NX Unigraphics or equivalent), Teamcenter, and Systems Engineering tools.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and tolerance stacks.
  • Previous experience designing components manufactured using tube bending processes.
  • Previous experience designing components manufactured using sheet metal fabrication processes (stamping, laser/water jet, hydroforming, welding, etc.).
  • Previous experience designing components manufactured using composite fiber layups.
  • Previous experience designing electrical harnesses.
  • Experience working in a New Product Introduction environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with experience working with all aspects of product design – customers, suppliers, other engineering specialties, shop floor personnel, etc.
