About the Role

We are currently seeking an Engineer – Permitting to join our team. This person will perform essential duties within the Midwest environmental services department, responsible for operations in Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama, including directing or assisting in the development of surface and underground mine permit applications and reports; providing technical expertise in soils, hydrology, vegetation, and wildlife; and preparing and coordinating with mine staff on designs for hydrologic structures, permits, and reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare scientific or engineering data for inclusion in permit applications, revisions, or amendments to meet regulatory performance standards and minimize mine costs.
  • Prepare and review maps of permit operational plans, soils, land use, geology, and wildlife for inclusion in permit applications to regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare and/or review hydrologic designs for inclusion in permit applications; work products include maps, text, and tables.
  • Coordinate and prepare permit applications, revisions, and amendments; collaborate with mine and agency personnel, and direct department personnel as needed.
  • Coordinate and prepare permit administration documents, including:
    • Process landowner notification mailings (certified and other)
    • Intent to mine, permit renewals, post‑mine land use comments, 6‑month mining notifications, annual blasting notices, pre‑mine surveys, ground‑water surveys.
    • Process annual blasting notice updates and submittals
    • Maintain SMCRA ownership and control database; provide updates to regulatory agencies
    • Responsible for public notification requirements; submit and track newspaper public notices; submit required proof‑of‑filing affidavits.
    • Process Preblast/Condition Survey Requests; record and distribute regulatory agency correspondence
    • General engineering design, layout, and monitoring
    • Manage and supervise contractors on environmental/mining projects
    • Provide temporary assistance to mine environmental staff and other Peabody operations as needed.
  • Ensure safety competencies: acknowledge responsibilities, complete safety & health tasks, and be knowledgeable in risk management and SLAM processes.

This full‑time position is based at Wild Boar mine in Indiana.

Schedule:

8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday‑Friday (with mandatory overtime and weekends as required).

About You Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, or Mining Engineering with 2–5 years of relevant engineering experience, or Master’s degree with 1–2 years of experience.
  • Preferred minimum of three years of experience in mining.
  • Knowledge of Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama mining environmental regulations.
Required Skills
  • Strong commitment to safety.
  • Excellent organizational, computer software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD/GIS, statistical applications), and writing skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with all levels of management, mine personnel, the general public, and regulatory agencies.
  • Active listening.
  • Collaboration in a teamwork setting.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and adjust to shifting priorities.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Required to obtain FE/EIT within the role.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) with the ability to obtain PE preferred.
Physical Requirements – Surface Environment
  • Stand for up to 4 hours per shift.
  • Seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Work from elevated positions; walk/climb stairs and ladders.
  • Wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE.
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions; have rapid reflexes and hand‑to‑eye coordination.
  • Lift/raise 10–50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently.
  • Work in extreme conditions (changing weather, dust, mud, varying noise, light/dark, artificial light, confined areas).
Physical Requirements – Office
  • Sit for up to 8 hours.
  • Use computer; communicate via email and phone.
  • Review paper and electronic documents; complete data entry.
  • Find, remove, return files; discuss issues by phone or in person.
  • Operate copier, fax machine.
