This role is the EH&S Senior Specialist - Environmental, based in Indianapolis, IN, with ownership of environmental compliance, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting. The position drives improvements in electricity usage, waste to landfill, and water consumption, and engages teammates on environmental topics.
The role includes ownership of the wastewater treatment plant operations and waste management programs, and reports to the site Environmental, Health and Safety Manager. Depending on experience, the role may be an individual contributor or a people leader with up to four direct reports.
- Environmental Program Ownership — administer the site’s environmental programs, create procedures, maintain records, report internally and externally, and develop teammate training.
- Lead the onsite wastewater treatment operations — direct daily work of wastewater treatment operators, implement projects to improve efficiency and reduce system upsets.
- Devise strategies to meet corporate environmental and sustainability objectives; develop targets and monitor performance using metrics and KPIs; proactively identify and manage projects to reduce site environmental impact.
- Cross-Functional Project Leadership — lead and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote EHS excellence and drive risk reduction; manage environmental projects across multiple departments and teams.
- Perform risk assessments and impact analyses; identify priorities and drive risk reduction projects in a continual improvement framework.
- Technical Leadership and Systems Management — own ISO 14001 and 45001 systems, serve as lead auditor for EHS Management Systems; lead investigations of environmental incidents; analyze data and drive program improvements; act as subject matter expert for wastewater treatment operations.
- Compliance and Regulatory Leadership — lead involvement in environmental programs and sustainability efforts, attend meetings, implement best practices, and share information; conduct internal inspections and audits; prepare and submit regulatory reports and plans.
- Operational Excellence — drive 5S, TPM, and workplace organization in the wastewater treatment department; provide technical guidance and day-to-day oversight of wastewater treatment technicians.
- A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry).
- Five or more years of experience in an industrial setting.
- Preferred knowledge of Indiana and US environmental regulations and ISO 14001 standards.
- Preferred Indiana Waste Water Treatment Operator License or the ability to obtain one within six months.
- Preferred experience with air permitting, reporting, and hazardous waste management.
- Extensive experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, including metal hydroxide precipitation.
- Experience in environmental program development and ownership; ability to work in both team and individual settings.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, time management, and data analysis skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office and data analysis software.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, perform extensive walking, work in confined spaces, wear a respirator, and endure hot/cold environments.
