Position Summary:
The Controls Systems Engineer is part of the Software Systems Capability function. The Controls Systems Engineer shall specify, design and validate complex sub-systems, including high-level requirements for the software and / or hardware system components; this will include creation of mathematical models and simulations of control and actuation systems. The Controls Systems Engineer is responsible for the on time delivery and quality of the controls sub-system and the artefacts associated with the design, verification and validation of the system.
This shall be achieved through decomposition of designs and development of tests, analysis to ensure that the system implementation satisfies the validated requirements.
- Reviews and agree high level control and instrumentation systems requirements including their testability.
- Analyses and translate high level requirements into a validated design for the control and instrumentation system.
- Captures applicable design constraints (must meet conditions) and quality attributes (may be traded) that apply to the control and instrumentation system.
- Designs and implements the control and instrumentation system to meet the high level requirements and design constraints/standards.
- Allocate control and instrumentation system requirements to test vehicles defined in the verification plan.
- Analyses the control and instrumentation system for functional behaviour, which may include modelling and simulation to demonstrate that the design meets the high level requirements
- Develops and reviews control system tests that will provide evidence to demonstrate that the control system requirements have been satisfied.
- Analyses verification test results against control and instrumentation system requirements.
- Provides targeted testing of control and instrumentation system functionality to support problem investigation and problem closures and customer issues.
- Liaises with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components of the system to facilitate effective component design.
- May be required to participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for the department, in conjunction with the department managers.
- May be required to develop, implement, document, and maintain policies, procedures, associated guidelines, tools and training as required.
- Develops the knowledge required to provide advice to project teams and be able to create, search, and reuse knowledge with some guidance from established practitioners.
- Produces reports where required to document the work carried out.
- Designs sub-systems to meet the functional requirements and design constraints by analysis and translation of customer requirements into a set of validated functional requirements for the system or sub-systems.
- Creates and validates complex high-integrity mathematical models of control and actuation systems.
- Analyses requirements for testability.
- May be required to performs detailed performance analyses of existing and future controls systems.
- Ensures robust and optimal (weight, cost, etc) designs and problem solutions through the effective application of appropriate engineering tools and applicable processes.
