Position: Sr. Principal Associate - HSE - Environmental (Water SME)
Location: Indianapolis

Job Position Overview

This role provides strategic and technical water management expertise within Global HSE, supporting global manufacturing, research, and other operations. It advances standards and long-term strategies for wastewater management, water use and recycling, groundwater quality, and drinking water compliance, translating regulatory/industry developments into practical, risk-based global solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Define and advance global water management strategies, requirements, and performance standards.
  • Assist new sites with environmental permits and operational/engineering controls.
  • Establish/evolve global water program data, tools, and metrics to track performance and drive improvement.
  • Anticipate/interpret/influence external water policy and regulations; translate into internal requirements and guidance.
  • Provide technical support for legislation/regulations involving technology- and water-quality standards.
  • Partner with site/functional HSE teams to sustain compliance and improve water pollution control.
  • Provide technical leadership/mentoring; lead technical forums/communities of practice.
  • Represent Lilly in industry/trade/regulatory forums.
  • Coordinate best available technique/technology determinations.
  • Provide senior-level expertise for complex, high-risk deviation events and permitting oversight upon request.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering/Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years in water pollution control, treatment technologies, and regulatory affairs in complex regulated environments.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis; no visa sponsorship.
Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Expertise in US Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Oil Pollution Prevention Act; EU IPPC licensing; international requirements.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical API manufacturing or other highly regulated industry.
  • Wastewater treatment, water reuse/recycling, groundwater quality.
  • Risk assessment experience; ability to influence leaders; clear technical writing; ability to translate complexity for diverse audiences.
  • MS/PhD preferred; enterprise global program governance; regulatory agency/association engagement; data/metrics/digital tools.
  • Travel 10–20%.
Compensation/Benefits
  • Anticipated wage: $115,500–$184,800; bonus eligibility (if applicable). Comprehensive benefits including 401(k), pension, vacation, medical/dental/vision, flexible benefits, life insurance, leave, and well-being benefits.
