Summary / Objective

The External Mortgage Loan Originator empowers members to achieve their home ownership and refinancing goals by expertly guiding them through the mortgage process while building strong, trust‑driven relationships with builders, real estate professionals, and member center staff.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategic projects as directed by the Management Team.
  • Identifies operational challenges affecting the team, researches potential solutions, and escalates recommendations to Management; promotes teamwork by supporting, reassuring, and encouraging peers.
  • Originates first mortgage loans for members and non‑members through realtor and builder referrals, online inquiries, and walk‑in traffic.
  • Meets with area realtors and builders to promote mortgage products and support loan origination volume.
  • Explains loan program features, benefits, and risks; reviews loan conditions with borrowers and collects required documentation.
  • Manages an active loan pipeline and communicates loan status to members, real estate agents, and related parties; performs timely follow‑up on leads and loan files.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with Branch employees to support mortgage education and generate application referrals.
  • Attends scheduled meetings and training sessions with mortgage department staff to stay current on industry changes.
  • Identifies opportunities and assists with the cross‑sale of additional products to members engaged in the mortgage process.
  • Manages the employee mortgage loan pipeline in accordance with privacy and confidentiality requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Prioritizes tasks and manages daily workflow in an organized and efficient manner, using internal systems to track follow‑ups, outstanding documentation, and member communications.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision while maintaining expected performance standards and proactively resolves member questions without prompting from management.
  • Adjusts quickly to changes in mortgage products, interest rates, or workflow priorities and supports team members during periods of high application volume or system updates.
  • Manages multiple loan files simultaneously while meeting required deadlines and maintains constructive dialogue with realtors, builders, and internal staff to support collaboration.
Work Environment

The position operates within a private, professional office environment.

  • Extended time working at a computer monitor.
  • Manual dexterity to handle, operate, and control equipment, materials, tools, and related objects.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Demonstrated communication, self‑motivation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to represent and support Mortgage Loan Originators for at least two years.
  • Minimum of five years of experience originating or processing first‑mortgage loans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven success building and maintaining relationships with realtors, builders, and other referral partners.
  • Strong understanding of mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, and loan processing workflows.
  • Experience managing a high‑volume loan pipeline with exceptional accuracy and follow‑through.
  • Familiarity with Encompass LOS, CRM, and digital mortgage platforms.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, fast‑paced team environment.
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Registrations
  • Requires active registration as a Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS).
  • Registration must be completed within sixty days of hire and maintained annually, including all required updates. Failure to obtain or maintain registration—or any criminal activity that would prohibit continued participation as an MLO—may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
