Under general supervision, to perform law enforcement, fire suppression, search and rescue, and emergency medical response services in Alpine County; and to perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSEducation: High school diploma or GED equivalent. College-level coursework leading to an associate degree in criminal justice, police science, public safety, or a closely related field is desirable.
Peace Officer Standards: Must meet the qualifications of an Alpine County Deputy Sheriff I and all applicable California peace officer standards.
Driver's License: Possession of a valid California driver's license with an "F" endorsement.
Background: Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprinting, and all required pre-employment clearances.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform the essential law enforcement, firefighting, emergency response, and search and rescue functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
APPOINTMENT AND ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTSAppointment level will be based on the candidate's qualifying experience and current P.O.S.T. and fire certifications. Candidates must obtain and maintain the certifications required for their appointed classification.
Deputy Sheriff Recruit:
Candidates appointed at the Deputy Sheriff Recruit level must meet Alpine County Deputy Sheriff Recruit qualifications and successfully complete the P.O.S.T. academy and other required training and certifications before advancement.
Bear Valley Public Safety Officer Recruit:
Experience in local law enforcement is desirable.
Must meet all qualifications of a Deputy Sheriff I.
Must meet all requirements of Bear Valley Public Safety Officer I within 24 months of appointment.
Required credentials include a P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement certificate, Firefighter I certificate from an accredited Fire Academy within 24 months of appointment, First Responder Medical Card, and CPR/Automatic Defibrillator certification.
Bear Valley Public Safety Officer I:
Six months as a Bear Valley Public Safety Officer Recruit.
All Recruit requirements, plus ICS 100 and ICS 200 training certifications.
Operational understanding of Bear Valley emergency equipment and basic working knowledge of hazardous materials response for first responders, verified by the Bear Valley Supervisor.
Bear Valley Public Safety Officer II:
One year as a Public Safety Officer I in Alpine County or two years as a local law enforcement or public safety officer with another agency.
All Public Safety Officer I requirements, plus Engine Boss,
ICS 300
, ICS 400
, Driver Operator 1A
, and S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior certifications.
Hands-on vehicle extrication and vehicle fire training.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITSThis is a 100% FTE position in a five-step salary system, with advancement upon satisfactory completion of a one-year probationary period and annual increases thereafter.

The County provides medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees, with employee co-payments dependent upon family status.
Vacation:
Accrued at 6.67 hours per month, or 10 vacation days per year.
Sick Leave:
Earned at 8 hours per month.
Holidays: 16 paid holidays per year.
Retirement:
Participation in the California Public Employees' Retirement System. New members receive the 2.7% at 57 plan when sworn.
