Role Overview
:

The Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer/Medical Director reports to the State Health Commissioner and is responsible for providing support and advocacy of agency initiatives and medical policy issues, serves as the medical expert delivering consultation within the agency including but not limited to all communicable disease investigations and public health emergencies, leads Indiana clinician communications related to public health matters, and represents the State Health Commissioner as assigned.

This position requires an active Indiana medical license. Experience in primary care and/or public health is preferred. Travel may be required but usual working conditions are within a normal office setting.

A Day in the Life:

Clinical Oversight & Medical Leadership

  • Advises the State Health Commissioner (SHC) and Chief of Staff on policy issues;
  • Serve as senior medical advisor for all communicable disease investigations and public health emergencies;
  • Reviews data and communication for clinical accuracy
  • Leads communication to clinicians to ensure Indiana clinicians are up to date on public health matters
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of summits, meetings, and conferences;
  • Consult on legislative issues as requested;
  • Represents the SHC at meetings, boards, commissions and committees as assigned;
  • Attends national meetings as requested by the SHC and/or Chief of Staff.

Medical Director duties include

  • Serves as expert and provides medical consultation to other medical and professional staff or programs, departments, or divisions within the agency, consistent with clinical experience and specialized training as assigned by the agency;
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations involving medical issues;
  • Maintains current knowledge of medical and health care issues;
  • Prepares reports and documents to communicate pertinent information to health care professionals and other target audiences;
  • Reference for medical information to health professionals and professional organizations, lay organizations and the media as needed;
  • Provides formal and informal instruction on medical and health care issues to a variety of internal personnel and external partners/audience;
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
