Protect Homes. Protect Kids. Protect the Community.

The Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) is seeking a Lead Poisoning Risk Assessor to help eliminate lead hazards in homes and child-occupied facilities across Marion County. This role directly impacts children’s health and housing safety by identifying risks, enforcing safety codes, and working with families and community partners to ensure homes are safe.

You’ll spend time in the field conducting inspections, risk assessments, and follow-ups — making a real difference where families live.

What You’ll Do Lead Inspections & Risk Assessments (50%)
  • Conduct on-site lead inspections and risk assessments in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities
  • Perform consumer product testing
  • Prepare detailed written reports with findings and recommended corrective actions
  • Monitor remediation work and conduct clearance examinations
Code Interpretation & Enforcement (20%)
  • Interpret and enforce housing and safety codes, ordinances, and statutes
  • Issue violation notices and corrective recommendations
  • Reinspect properties to verify compliance
Documentation & Evidence (15%)
  • Gather evidence and serve as a professional witness when required
Collaboration & Community Engagement (15%)
  • Coordinate with internal teams and partner agencies to support families with lead-poisoned children
  • Attend health fairs, neighborhood meetings, and community events
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness and response
  • Support H.O.P.E. events annually
What You Bring Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 1+ year experience in lead, asbestos, construction, environmental health, housing/healthy homes, inspections, or abatement
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation
  • Valid Indiana Lead Inspector & Risk Assessor license or ability to obtain within 6 months
Knowledge & Skills
  • Basic understanding of home construction
  • Environmental health and public health principles
  • Code enforcement and evidence gathering
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently and adjust to changing priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based systems
Why MCPHD
  • ✔ Make a direct impact on children’s health and housing safety
  • ✔ Field-based, meaningful public health work
  • Supportive team environment
  • ✔ Opportunities to grow in environmental health and code enforcement

Work occurs in offices, community settings, and private homes — sometimes in inclement weather and high-crime areas. Travel throughout Marion County required.
