MMGE - GENE TESTING LAB (IN-GTL-IUINA)

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

The IU Genetic Testing Laboratories (IUGTL) and its five core sections of Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, Pharmacogenomics, Diagnostic Genomics and Biochemical Genetics, offer comprehensive genetic testing for the diagnosis of genetic disorders and the ongoing management of disease.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Works with a team of cytogenetics laboratory staff to complete CAP/CLIA accredited clinical genetic testing to diagnose and/or manage patients.
  • Works day to day involving accessioning, processing, and analyzing patient specimens following standard operating procedures.
  • Tests methods primarily used in this position including tissue culture and microscopy (bright field and fluorescent).
  • May perform DNA extractions; patient specimen types studied include, but are not limited to, bone marrow, whole blood, tumor and fetal tissue samples.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs analysis and interpretation of patient results.
  • Troubleshoots, reviews, and improves laboratory procedures, quality control, and quality assurance monitoring.
  • Performs activities related to the basic maintenance and operation of the laboratory including creation of lab reagents, monitoring of laboratory supplies, and participation in quality control/quality assurance activities.
  • Maintains documentation and reporting information.
Education
  • Required
    :
    Bachelor's degree in a related science field

  • Prior experience with any of these techniques and/or prior work in a clinical laboratory

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$60,561.60 per year to $65,561.60 per year based on commensurate experience and internal equity within the department.

The work week will be Tuesday - Saturday.
