NEUROLOGY (IN-NEUR-IUINA)

The Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Neurology has a rich tradition in academic neurology with a national reputation in neurological education and neuroscience research. The department is located in the Indiana University Health Neuroscience Center, a state-of-the-art outpatient center that unites all the specialties that involve nervous system disorders, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neuropsychology and Neuroradiology. It is also home of the main outpatient Neurophysiology laboratory at IU Health.

The adjoining IU School of Medicine Neurosciences Research Building enables clinicians, basic scientists and clinician‑scientists to collaborate in an environment that is rarely achieved in academic medicine.

Immune Aging and Neurodegeneration Lab

The Immune Aging and Neurodegeneration Lab, led by Professor Rebecca Wallings, is seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team. Our lab is dedicated to understanding how age-related changes in the immune system contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Our research sits at the intersection of immunology, neuroscience, and aging biology, and is driven by the idea that immune dysfunction across the lifespan such as immune exhaustion, inflammaging, and impaired immune resilience can shape vulnerability to neurodegeneration.

The successful candidate will support multiple ongoing projects and contribute to a collaborative, team‑oriented research environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leads research activities and protocol development.
  • Maintains equipment, including preventive maintenance, scheduling repairs as needed, service agreement negotiations, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and maintaining an active list of vendors to respond to equipment loss.
  • Supervises, mentors, and provides training for junior‑level staff.
  • Prepares summary data reports, and creates and maintains databases for storage and analysis.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable local and federal regulations.
  • May design and conduct a wide range of complex experiments.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

Education Required
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in a sciences related field.
Work Experience
  • 3 years of laboratory research experience.

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
