Position Summary

Dr. Chandy John, Distinguished Professor, Ryan White Professor of Pediatrics, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, Adjunct Professor, School of Public Health is currently seeking applications from highly motivated, team-oriented candidates for a research scientist. The full-time position is in the division of Pediatrics Infectious Disease Research.

The Assistant Research Professor plays a central role in advancing the division's research platform by leading rigorous quantitative analysis, contributing to study design, and supporting the scientific direction of multiple actively funded global health projects. This position provides critical expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, and data interpretation across studies focused on severe malaria, sickle cell disease, infection prevention, and neurodevelopment in low-resource settings.

The faculty member not only drives analytic components of grant‑funded research but also plays a key instructional role through the design and delivery of annual multi‑session workshops on advanced statistical methods for students and trainees. In doing so, the position strengthens the unit's research capacity, supports successful execution of multidisciplinary global health studies, and contributes to scholarly productivity through manuscript preparation, mentorship, and participation in new grant applications as a co‑investigator.

The Infectious Disease Research lab is dedicated to advancing global child health through high‑impact research that integrates infection, nutrition, and neurodevelopment in vulnerable pediatric populations. Our mission is to generate rigorous, actionable evidence that improves clinical outcomes for children affected by malaria, sickle cell anemia, and other infectious and nutritional challenges, particularly in sub‑Saharan Africa. Current projects, including SMART Brain, ZIPS-2, and the Research Training in Infection, Nutrition and Neurodevelopment program, reflect a commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, long‑term capacity building, and the translation of scientific discovery into global health solutions.

We maintain strong partnerships between IUSM and Global Health Uganda, combining local expertise with international research infrastructure. In parallel with our research agenda, the division invests in training the next generation of scientists and clinicians by offering high‑quality statistical education and mentoring that equip trainees with the analytical skills necessary to lead impactful global health research.

IUSM is committed to being a welcoming campus community and we seek candidates whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts contribute to robust learning and working environments for all students, staff, and faculty. We invite individuals who will join us in our mission to improve health equity and well‑being for all throughout the state of Indiana.
