Overview

The Medical Lab Scientist II is responsible for performing, evaluating, and reporting technical laboratory procedures on patient specimens for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Follows established procedures to ensure laboratory quality control and compliance with professional standards.

Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens according to established protocol.
  • Report test results in a timely manner.
  • Follow procedures for laboratory quality control, regulatory requirements, compliance activities.
  • Effectively manage resources such as productivity, supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Plan work and complete responsibilities efficiently.
Education and Training
  • Required:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Science.
  • Preferred:
    Master’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
Work Experience
  • Required:

    1–3 years as a Medical Technologist.
  • Preferred:
    Substitutions allowed—one year of Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science may substitute for one year of experience.
Licenses and Certifications
  • AMT Medical Laboratory Scientist – American Medical Technologists.
  • International Medical Laboratory Scientist – American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist – American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • AAB Medical Technologist – American Association of Bioanalysts.
  • Medical Technologist – Tennessee Department of Health – Medical Laboratory Board.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated competency in routine testing in assigned laboratory area.
  • Effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to organize tasks and projects without close supervision.
Supervision

No supervisory responsibilities; may observe and instruct student technologists.

Physical Demands
  • Climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping.
  • Exert up to 50 lbs occasionally or 25 lbs frequently.
  • Requires good visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
