Role Overview:

In this role, the Health Educator will focus their time on two major priorities. First will be ensuring that local health departments across Indiana are adequately educated and trained to perform case management for children with elevated blood lead levels. This is done using a remote training platform and through on-site face-to-face education performed at health departments around the state. Second, is working with healthcare providers and parents to ensure children under 7 are being adequately tested for lead in their blood, and that those test results are being reported to the State.

Work is primarily performed at IDOH’s main office in Indianapolis, but day travel up to 1-2 times per week across the state may be required.

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Evaluate health education materials/equipment.
  • Plan, develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate health education programs for schools, community groups, business/industry, agencies, and special populations.
  • Disseminate data and health information to professionals and non-professionals as requested.
  • Coordinate health related activities with organizations, appointed councils and other groups at the local, state, and national level.
  • Conduct workshops, conferences, and training sessions to educate professionals about health education issues.
  • Develop, write, and review grants related to health education.
  • Represent the agency on various professional boards/committees concerning health.
  • Consult on and/or facilitates health education programming within the agency.
  • Communicate with various constituencies on a regular basis to provide updated health information.
  • Keep abreast of developments in health education by reviewing journals and attending conferences.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Specialized knowledge of public health, allied health, health & safety and/or health education.
  • Broad knowledge of educational principles, theories, and methodology.
  • Broad knowledge of, and ability to apply, public health and health education/promotion philosophies, methods, and techniques.
  • Specialized knowledge of social, behavioral, and biological sciences.
  • Working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to education and public health.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with professionals and non- professionals.
  • Ability to plan, prepare and present public presentations in a variety of settings such as health education workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
