Responsibilities
- Examines application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, medical reports and other documents to determine risk based on factors such as financial standing, age, occupation, accident experience, and property condition.
- Reviews company records to ascertain insurance in force on single or related risks, and evaluates potential losses from catastrophe or excess insurance.
- Underwrites or brokers risks, ensuring all required information is obtained, applications are completed, quotes and binders are confirmed in writing, and policies are issued promptly and accurately.
- Completes state filings where applicable and makes necessary tax payments in accordance with state laws.
- Secures payments on bound or written risks.
- Reviews, analyzes and underwrites risks submitted by producers; rates submissions for premium and terms; analyzes exposures for quotes on new and renewal business; issues written indications, quotes, and binders; and engages inspection companies for additional information or to explain underwriting policies.
- Markets and meets with retail agency customers to develop business and cultivate relationships to grow a book of business.
- Utilizes company binding authorities or brokering risks to negotiate placements and extends company facilities as required.
- Ensures coding on required forms is completed and correctly utilized.
- Services and perpetuates existing business, produces new business, and maintains a keen awareness of priorities.
- Instructs and trains processors and assistants; reviews indications, quotes, binders, submissions and policies for completeness and accuracy.
- Provides guidance and training to reduce clerical workload and develops underwriting and brokering skills and techniques.
- Fosters and improves relationships with other departments, producers, companies, and competitors.
- CIC or CPCU candidate with thorough familiarity with applicable ISO manuals, forms, rating plans, policy forms (coverages, exclusions, conditions and terms).
- P&C State license and E&S license.
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four‑year college or university, or five years of insurance experience (including two years as an underwriting assistant).
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite and paperless environments.
- Exceptional telephone demeanor.
- Experience with excess and surplus lines underwriting agencies or companies.
Routine or periodic travel may be required. Candidates must be able to drive their own vehicle or a rental vehicle, maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record, and keep minimum required insurance coverages.
CompensationPay Range: $80,000 – $100,000 annually.
