Job Description

The University of Notre Dame invites applications for a dynamic and strategic attorney to serve as its lead employment lawyer. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a meaningful role at one of the nation’s premier universities, helping to shape employment practices that support people, purpose, and academic excellence. In this role, you will collaborate closely with senior leaders across the institution, bringing clarity, perspective, and sound judgment to some of the University’s most important workforce decisions.

As a strategic legal partner on campus, the Associate General Counsel will serve as a trusted advisor to the Office of Human Resources and senior administrative leadership on a wide range of employment issues. The role works across disciplines and constituencies to address complex employment issues, while advancing a culture of mission-based and thoughtful decision-making. In close collaboration with a talented team in the Office of General Counsel, this role will help safeguard the University while supporting innovation and institutional growth.

Some of the key responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Serve as strategic counselor for administrative and academic units throughout the University on a broad and complex range of employment-related matters;
  • Lead and coordinate the University’s response to employment charges and claims brought in federal and state agencies and courts, as well as any employment-related government audits or inquiries;
  • Support the University’s legal compliance efforts in the areas of labor and employment;
  • Monitor and stay current on developments and emerging legal and regulatory trends;
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain deep subject matter expertise; and
  • Identify areas of employment-related risk and best practices, and develop and deliver education and training programs to campus partners.

The Associate General Counsel will provide additional legal support to other designated areas of the University based on interest, experience, and demand.

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, with the ability to obtain admission in Indiana, if required
  • Significant experience practicing in and strong working knowledge of employment law
  • Demonstrated experience handling employment-related charges or claims in agencies and/or courts
  • Proven ability to provide responsive and proactive legal guidance to clients
  • Exceptional judgment, analytical skills, and written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously in a complex, fast-paced environment
