Overview
Position is responsible for ordering, receiving, stocking, and issuing all inventory and related duties for the parts room. This includes all fleet owned by the City of Indianapolis ranging from small engine to heavy equipment.
Position Responsibilities- Receive, identify, unpack, store, and issue all parts (stock and non‑stock), equipment, and/or materials.
- Label new stock upon arrival.
- Work counter for technicians to issue parts and gather ordering information.
- Prepare paperwork for group leaders/foremen for notification of special ordered parts.
- Run reports from computerized inventory management system.
- Use City finance system to acquire purchase orders per budget.
- Update inventory via IFS in‑house fleet system.
- Re‑label stock with replacement numbers provided by vendors.
- Contact vendors for quotes, availability, and place orders by phone or online.
- Lookup parts for repairs in computerized systems and parts books.
- Count stock items for physical inventory and spot checks.
- Charge items to correct work order, unit, department, or indirect account.
- Create hoses for equipment repairs.
- Takes calls for orders from road service technicians.
- Operate office equipment (fax, copier, scanner, label machine, etc.).
- File copies of purchase orders and invoices.
- Complete receipts for financial system for payment.
- Handle drums of hazardous chemicals for storage or disposal.
- Order and disburse oxygen and acetylene tanks for shop and road service.
- Update computerized parts lookup systems.
- Assist all departments with required items.
- Receive UPS and Fed Ex deliveries for all IFS areas.
- Perform any stock room functions, including operating supply vehicle.
- Experience with automotive, heavy duty, and fleet vehicle parts.
- Must obtain and maintain a forklift license per OSHA standards.
- Computer experience – menu driven and online.
- Knowledge of shipping and receiving procedures and safety precautions.
- Physical ability: straight pulling/pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, bending; lift up to 50 lbs.; may move 55 lbs. gallon drums with moving equipment.
- Valid operator’s license required.
- Must pass pre‑employment physical.
- Will be required to work overtime.
Work is performed in a maintenance facility primarily in a storeroom environment with frequent travel and exposure to dust, silica, electrical energy, solvents, vibrations while road testing vehicles, and subject to various road conditions. May work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, and in cramped positions.
