Position DescriptionThe Assistant Store Manager is the primary operational leader responsible for executing the Store Manager’s direction and ensuring daily standards are consistently maintained across all departments. This role leads shifts, manages floor performance, develops team members, and ensures guest service, safety, and accountability expectations are upheld.
Assistant Managers operate as Manager on Duty and are responsible for the building during assigned shifts.
Assistant Store Managers typically work a minimum 50-hour work week including weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities and Duties- Act as Manager on Duty
- Direct team positioning and floor coverage
- Adjust staffing during peak business periods
- Ensure daily checklists are completed correctly (verify quality)
- Maintain store conditions: clean, stocked, fast, and organized
- Identify operational breakdowns and correct immediately
- Support all departments as needed
- Resolve guest concerns
- Step into escalated situations immediately
- Support team members during difficult interactions
- Coach team members after guest incidents
- Identify patterns in guest complaints and address behavior or process gaps
- Deliver daily coaching conversations
- Reinforce expectations and follow up
- Conduct official coaching and progressive discipline
- Document performance conversations accurately
- Develop Leads and strengthen shift ownership
- Support onboarding and training execution
- Complete shift notes and communication logs
- Document incidents and policy violations
- Complete coaching and corrective action paperwork
- Communicate team concerns to Store Manager
- Ensure legal and policy compliance during conversations
- Enforce safety procedures and safe behaviors
- Execute Emergency Action Plans when needed
- Oversee incident reporting
- Monitor cash handling and theft prevention
- Ensure alcohol and tobacco compliance
- Utilize action cards during emergencies
- Assist with schedule execution and adjustments
- Complete reporting and reconciliation tasks
- Maintain readiness for inspections and audits
- Ensure operational standards are followed daily
- Communicate store needs to Store Manager
- Maintain calm leadership during rushes
- Represent Wally’s brand standards
- Remain visible and approachable on the floor
- Support a respectful and accountable work environment
- Degree from college or university; or 1-2 years or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in job related field
- Retail, convenience, food service, or management experience preferred
- Ability to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment
- Prolonged walking and/or standing for 8-12 continuous hours
- Ability to work on the store’s busiest days including most weekends and holidays
- Ability to work a rotating schedule that alternates between day and night
