DescriptionArea 10 Agency on Aging was established in 1978, as part of a network of more than 600 Area Agencies on Aging across the United States. As a local private nonprofit, Area 10 Agency’s mission is to serve as a leader in providing resources, solutions and connections for seniors, persons with disabilities and family caregivers living in Monroe and Owen counties.
The Executive Director is the leader of the agency and expected to be a servant leader. With an annual budget over $4,400,000, the agency operates with a complexity of federal, state, and local funding, as well as private donations and a separate senior housing limited liability corporation.
The Executive Director reports to a volunteer board of directors operating under the Carver Model of governance. The Executive Director provides leadership for the agency and is accountable for planning, developing, coordinating and administering the programs and projects. The Executive Director must be passionate about the agency’s mission and work collaboratively with agency management in the ongoing fulfillment of the mission.
ResponsibilitiesLeadership
- Demonstrates vision and effectiveness in development systems and long-term plans with concrete strategies for all programs and services, including the biennial Area Plan
- Leads and manages a team while fostering an empowering organizational climate that develops and enhances staff morale and talents
- Identifies opportunities for the agency to leverage cross-program strengths and to take advantage of new opportunities or partnerships to address community challenges
- Establishes effective decision-making processes that will enable the agency to achieve goals and objectives
- Cultivates a transparent working relationship with the board, staff, and partners to ensure open communication on issues affecting the agency, including fiscal and programmatic matters
- Serves as a non-voting member of the Area 10 Council on Aging and prepares reports and responses to information requests
- Develops and manages the organization’s overall finances, including budget analysis, ensuring the agency has the resources needed to fulfill its mission
- Works in collaboration with the board and development committee to maintain and build agency resources through partnerships and fundraising activities
- Pursues and oversees additional funding sources, including grant writing
- Oversees implementation of all grants and approves all required grant reporting
- Oversees and supervises the implementation and evaluation of all agency programs, services and contracts, including reporting as needed
- Demonstrates excellent business management through a commitment to fiscal and programmatic integrity and excellent administrative skills
- Supervises the hiring, training, and developing of the Area 10 Agency staff, including ensuring periodic written evaluations are conducted for every employee
- Administers all agency policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal guidelines
- Ensures compliance with regulations regarding human resources, privacy, accounting, advocacy, fundraising and certifications
- Reviews and signs all contracts, grant agreements, financial reports, plans, and hiring and termination documents
- Serves as the Registered Agent for the Area 10 Council on Aging of Monroe and Owen Counties, Inc. and President of the Area Ten Development Corporation, Inc. and Edgewood Village Apartments, Inc.
- Advocates for older adults and individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers in Monroe and Owen counties
- Stays informed on pending and existing legislation that may impact the agency and shares relevant information with the board and other stakeholders as necessary and appropriate
- Coordinates activities with legislative issues, including writing or discussing issues with the board, participants, stakeholders and community leaders
