Position: Indy Island - Year-Round Head Lifeguard

Overview

Position is responsible for routine daily operational tasks related to aquatic operations at the assigned park location under the supervision and direction of the pool or park manager. Work‑related activities include all facets of recreational programming, aquatic operations, frontline customer service, and service delivery. Established policies and procedures control actions. Independent judgment is utilized when no policies are available, and errors may cause serious risk and liability.

Incumbent will exercise good judgment in aquatic safety and facility operations, making quick, concise decisions that affect the health, safety and well‑being of pool patrons and staff. Position reports to:

Position

Responsibilities
  • Provides overall supervision of programs, services, facilities, and personnel at the aquatic facility.
  • Assumes responsibility for facility operations in the absence of the Pool Manager.
  • Maintains the aquatic facility with the highest attention to safety for participants and employees.
  • Ensures minimum service hours and meets standards for independent and internal performance and risk management audits.
  • Manages admission fee collection, completes daily cash reports, prepares deposits, and handles other necessary forms and reports.
  • Monitors change fund and reports discrepancies to the supervisor; is fiscally accountable for admissions and cash balancing.
  • Provides and coordinates proper on‑deck supervision of staff, appropriate lifeguard coverage, attentiveness, rotations, facility inspections, and closures when required by health and safety guidelines.
  • Operates the facility with focus on water quality and balance.
  • Cleans and restocks restroom facilities.
  • Maintains detailed records for facility inspections.
  • Assists the supervisor in recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, disciplining, and advising on‑site personnel and volunteers.
  • Maintains and provides lifeguard and staff in‑service training.
  • Assists the supervisor in implementing and evaluating aquatic programs and services at the location.
  • Is responsible for proper collection and depositing of revenues, financial accountability, and record keeping.
  • Supervises training and monitoring of adherence to departmental policy and procedure.
  • Handles opening, closing, securing the facility, answering phones, and communicating with the public.
  • Maintains a clean facility, grounds, deck, filter, and chemical room.
  • Scans assigned zone of protection, enforces rules, and manages proper rotation.
  • Provides safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions, and first aid when necessary.
  • Monitors participants with a high priority on safety and exemplary customer service.
  • Follows all established protocols for biohazard materials and aquatic facility rules, protecting self from sun exposure.
  • Reports immediately any hazardous conditions to the supervisor, including inability to properly scan zone due to weather or other conditions.
  • Teaches, coaches, and/or assists with lessons, swim team, other programs, and special events.
  • Provides proper supervision and safe operation of all aquatic programs.
  • Adheres to department policy and procedure at the aquatic location.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
