Regional Vice President, Commercial Lines

We are seeking a proven insurance leader, preferably residing within the Midwest territory, with established agency relationships and strong regional market expertise to support our strategic growth initiative. Jurisdictional knowledge and leadership experience in underwriting across the Midwest are strongly preferred. The position reports to a Senior Vice President, Commercial Lines – Small Business.

Job Objective

The Regional Vice President, Commercial Lines is responsible for the growth and profitability of their region and market segment. With full P&L accountability, the RVP is expected to improve business results, oversee and direct work that improves quality and efficiency, develop technical competencies in their team, provide products and services to compete effectively, build agency relationships, oversee sales activities, analyze business performance and trends, and develop external customer knowledge about commercial lines.

Functions
  • Ensure growth and profitability of a specific market segment and region as measured by P&L.
  • Oversee and direct performance of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Develop and implement strategic direction, best practices and business plan objectives.
  • Effectively manage agency distribution channel and ensure sales strategies are executed to drive business growth.
  • Provide expertise on policy, strategies, tactics, technical disciplines, product development, processes, regulations, compliance, and market conduct.
  • Perform quality control and direct quality audits.
  • Manage development projects including business requirements and timelines for coverages, pricing, rating, systems logic, and automation.
  • Direct pricing strategy development from individual risk to portfolio levels.
  • Oversee product and service development initiatives based on trend monitoring and competitor analysis.
  • Analyze competitor products, services and pricing intelligence and make recommendations for new and revised offerings.
  • Present and train stakeholders on product and service introductions and enhancements.
  • Create innovative solutions from competitor and internal trend analysis.
  • Utilize data to make product and service development decisions.
  • Develop guidelines, policies and procedures to address business needs.
  • Address compliance and regulatory issues and recommend solutions.
  • Maintain loss frequency and severity benchmarks.
  • Create underwriting instructions and policies.
  • Collaborate with field sales to develop state profit and growth strategies.
  • Lead technical pricing team to analyze rates and trends to meet profitability goals.
  • Coordinate rate revision schedule with systems integration and field teams.
  • Make fact-based strategic decisions based on market knowledge.
  • Communicate and coordinate key profit metrics with Claims Operations, Underwriting Operations, and Agency Operations.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university strongly preferred.
  • Master's degree in management or relevant business area preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience with a property/casualty insurance carrier handling commercial lines products, including worker’s compensation.
  • Minimum five years of management experience preferred.
  • Professional insurance designations relevant to area of expertise desired.
  • Periodic travel in designated region required.
  • Knowledge and ability to develop best practices in assigned areas.
  • Judgment and compliance with regulations or standards.
  • Strong teamwork and organizational skills.
  • Logical reasoning and problem solving.
  • Knowledge of underwriting administration, risk administration, classification, insurance and risk management, accounting, and premium audit.
  • Superior understanding of insurance policy form and content.
  • Exceptional communication, analytical, research, documentation and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of cost rating plans and pricing methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complaints regarding contracts, coverages, rating plans.
  • Effective organizational and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of design, implementation and interfaces of current systems.
  • Ability to apply confidentiality appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagram or schedule instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Thorough understanding of competitors and alternative markets.
  • Ability to articulate financial results and strategic impact to senior management.
