Soundness Technician - 2nd or 3rd Shift
Responsible for checking the internal soundness of castings through nondestructive testing procedures to ensure customer requirements are achieved and are in compliance. Once trained, this position will work our 2nd or 3rd Shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Gamma Rays castings in priority order.
- Logs daily utilization of equipment and daily utilization of radiation source.
- Performs and logs daily maintenance check of radiographic devices and warning equipment.
- Records pocket dosimeter readings daily.
- Requisition s departmental supplies.
- Ultrasonically tests castings when required per specification(s).
- Starts up, operates, shuts down, cleans, maintains and replenishes chemicals for all equipment used for RT and UT.
- Locates and transfers all casting to be gamma rayed.
- Organizes and files gamma ray film.
- Fills out any and all log sheets, checks sheets and/or records required.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Time Stamps completed work.
- Follows job work instructions and training matrix, where applicable.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities for a Lead Operator:
- Schedules the efficient work flow within the Gamma Ray Facility in conjunction with the Soundness Supervisor.
- Prepares and continuously reviews the Technique Sheets for throughput and/or quality improvements.
- Evaluates, troubleshoots, and repairs all equipment used by the department.
- Leads problem solving efforts and works with the Soundness Supervisor to implement improvements. Actively seeks, identifies, and suggests improvements for areas, processes, and people, including reviewing UT & RT results with appropriate materials engineers and monitoring results from changes.
- Prepares, packages, and removes radioactive sources for shipment.
- Interacts with internal and external customers as directed.
- Performs Liquid Penetrant Tests as needed.

Education/
Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- RT on the job training 2000 hours
- Proficient in training and demonstrating the proper execution of textbook lessons and other training aids to assist in the certification of other Soundness Technicians.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer
Skills:
Basic knowledge of computers is required.
Certificates and Licenses:
Soundness Technician Level C:
Is able to perform all of the essential duties and responsibilities from above, with minimal to no supervision. He/she can only perform radiography once certified to RT Level I & II.
Soundness Technician Level B Training
Required:
- RT Level I&II-40 hours each, Certification required every 5 years
- UT:
Can either have a working knowledge of or be Level I&II Certified. - Radiation Safety Certification (IRRSP Cert.)
- Valid Fork Truck license
Soundness Technician Level A:
- RT Level I&II-40 hours each, Certification required every 5 years
- UT Level I&II-40 hours each, Certification required every 3 years
