Freetown Village, Inc. is Seeking an Executive Director
Freetown Village, Inc., an Indianapolis-based living history museum “without walls,” is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Executive Director to lead the organization through its next period of growth and sustainability.
Through historical interpretation, educational programming, artistic performances, storytelling, and community partnerships, Freetown Village advances public understanding of African American lives, history, arts, and culture.
The Executive Director will serve as the organization’s chief executive officer, principal fundraiser, public spokesperson, and strategic leader. Working directly with the Board of Directors and closely with the Board Chair, the Executive Director will be responsible for organizational leadership, fundraising, financial sustainability, program oversight, staff management, partnerships, and community visibility.
Key responsibilities include:- Developing and implementing organizational and fundraising strategies
- Cultivating individual donors, major gifts, sponsors, foundations, and grant funders
- Strengthening financial management and long-term sustainability
- Providing strategic oversight of educational programs, performances, and community initiatives
- Leading staff, contractors, performers, consultants, and volunteers
- Supporting Board development, governance, fundraising, and ambassadorship
- Building relationships with schools, cultural institutions, businesses, community organizations, and philanthropic partners
- Serving as the public face and chief spokesperson of Freetown Village
- At least five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a nonprofit, cultural, educational, museum, historical, or arts organization
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor cultivation, grants, sponsor ships, or revenue development
- Strong financial-management and organizational-leadership experience
- Experience working with a Board of Directors
- Excellent communication, public-speaking, and relationship-building skills
- Knowledge of African American history, cultural programming, public history, performing arts, or community-based education is strongly preferred
Salary: Starting at $65,000
Employment Status: Full-time
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Schedule: Primarily weekday business hours with some evening and weekend responsibilities
Travel: Local travel throughout Indianapolis and surrounding areas is required
Hybrid Work: Limited flexibility may be available based on organizational needs
